can't give you a definet answer.. but you could possibly check one thing? not sure if it will tell you much.
I believe all (if not most cars) the gear before top gear is always 1:1 with the engine. So, if a 5 speed manual, 4th gear will be 1:1. you'll see this when you change into 4th and accelerate the rev counter and speedo will go up at exactly the same rate, i.e the needles will move around the counter at exactly the same time. This is assuming you have a rev counter

The 300TDI does not have a RPM counter these were not introduced until the Puma models were introduced.
What I am looking for is MPH per 1000rpm. Thanks |

Can’t help with a 300Tdi but on a 200Tdi I achieve this on a flat road
Defender 90 county 1000 rpm up to twenty mph up to third gear 2000 rpm 30- 40 mph fourth gear 3000 rpm 50-60 mph fifth gear 3500 rpm 70 mph fifth gear I rarely go faster than 70 mph but at times I do touch 80 when ovetaking and the rev counter tends to just creep over 3500. Hi
I believe your 200TDI has a different gearbox the 300TDI has a R380 type. The engine sounds as if it is running at quite high RPM even at 50MPH and before anybody suggests it we are not in low box! Thanks |

Sounds normal to me. You could check the ratio of the transfer box which should be shown on a label located underneath the level plug. Also the serial number of the transfer box is adjacent to this and this will tell you (from a look up table on Ashcrofts web site)
The standard ratio I believe is 1.4 (on a TD5 anyway) which feels low geared, as at 50mph you are looking for another gear. I also believe some Defenders had a 1.6 ratio transfer box which would defenatly give high revs at 50mph. Recently I had a Discovery transfer box 1.2 ratio fitted which is a great improvement and drives well at higher speeds. ------------------------------------------------ 2002 TD5 90 HT County |

If you go on Ashcroft's website it gives all the info you need and all the options for improving, bigger wheels being the easiest DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

IIRC 5th is 0.77 as standard with a 1.4 transfer (converted mine to 1.2 and makes cruising more pleasant but towing a 2.7 tonne 3.6TDV8 L322 interesting).
The diffs are 3.54 as well. If I've got my calculations right a 31" tyre (265/75R16 for example) will be doing just under 2900RPM whereas a 1.2 transfer box puts it to just under 2500RPM. |
