Welding a Td5
Hi Guys,

I'm hoping to get a bit of a work party going this weekend to finally knock the 200tdi problems on the head and to start sorting some issues on the Td5.

One of them being the rear door needs some welds as its cracking a bit.

I have never had to remove the battery on a Td5 before so whats the procedure?

I don't want to cause any problems with the immobilizer or alarm module Embarassed Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

For the sake of 6 bolts, I'd take it off the hinges? Be easier to weld on as well?

True but I fear it may need remedial work to allow it to come off the hinges in 1 piece Laughing

Really?

I was told you always had to undo the battery when welding on a vehicle or it can cause it to explode Shocked Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Not so much battery, but alternators, airbags, and ecu are a bit sensitive to spikes.

Always disconnect battery when welding.

All our tractors have a big sign saying words to the effect of "isolate battery and put earthing clamp as close as possible to where you're welding".

Not to say anything will go wrong, but they less chance you have of killing electrics the better.

Disconnect the ecu multi plugs too. The ecu on a td5 is earthed through the drivers seat box, I have had to replace two that have been blown by other garages carrying out welding work.

Thanks for all the comments guys Bow down

In the end we took the rear wheel off the back door and stripped it down and decided to just go without the spare for now so I'm making up a plate at work tomorrow to fit and then will get a spare wheel carrier to take the weight.

Then in time will replace the door as the door skin is well past saving Big Cry Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197
