Trailer lights.
I am fed up with my box trailer lights, each time I go to use it one or more of the lights fails to work and I have to mess about to get them to work. The units have filament bulbs fitted and I am thinking about swapping them for L.E.D. units .

Now the problem is I know nothing about the compatibility of these units with the Land Rover wiring set up, which is a 2008 110 Defender.

Can I just fit them and they will work?
Do I need to fit something else in line for L.E.D. units to work with the land rover lights, if so will this allow me to tow the caravan which has filaments bulbs? Don't make old people mad.

just fit led lights (complete units not bulb replacement leds ) and they will work ok , but you may find the dash trailer indicator light wont work with leds , which is something your should have if trailer connected

could be done by putting a resistor inline on indicator wires on the trailler then would all function as normal

no need to change anything on defender and your caravan will work fine

or change everything to led Whistle

Thanks Munch90.

Change all over to L.E.D. Shocked I may own a Land Rover but I'm not made of money as I'm a pensioner. Don't make old people mad.

Everything is tickety boo if you have LED lighting on the Landy and an LED relay.
It will work perfectly with an all LED trailer bar one niggle which is why I've stuck to incandescent on the trailer I have for now at least..
The Defender has a dash light to signify a trailer is fitted, and this is a legal requirement or a buzzer for warning of an indicator bulb out.
With an LED relay in the Landy and incandescent lit trailer everything will work fine including the trailer light on dash.

If you want an LED lit trailer all lighting is fine bar indicators as the trailer light don't illuminate but should work perfectly.

So there is three options, LED Landy with:
1 ) Incandescent lit trailer with dash light.
2) LED trailer with resistors on the indicators on,y thus illuminating the dash light as per legal requirement.
3) Fit a buzzer in the Landy for the L&R indicator voiding the trailer light completely off but still legal.

I have stayed with option 1 as I didn't want to bother with wiring in a buzzer and for my particular trailer there isn't LED lighting avaible that I think is that great. Yet at least.
It's something I've considered but put on a back burner for now.
I suppose the dash light is more factory and the buzzer more versatile.

Thumbs Up

Agree with CustomSteve.

LED lights are not as good as people say as they do fail and cause issues with dashboard indicators and speed of flash.

However in my research on this for work (we run over 180 trailers) the best thing is getting the lamps serviced properly - a spot of copper grease on contacts stops corrosion and keeps a good contact.

There is a half way house option made by Radex which is a lamp unit that. has LEDs for side lights only, the rest are bulbs. Got them on our Bateson trailers and they are great.

you don't need led lighting or led relay on the defender to use led trailer lamps , std lighting and std relay ( which I think he has ) will work fine , only trailer light on dash wont work easy overcome with resisters if he doesn't want to change anything on defender

The reason for the change is that the bulbs blow for know reason while its stood doing nothing, ( working at time when its unhitched, not working when tested on hitching up), blubs jumping out of holders.
Also I was stopped by the police three times on a 40 mile trip for brake a light not working, first time blown bulb, 2nd time the replacement had jumped out, third time another blown bulb. The blown bulbs check on arriving home and found to work.

Romadog............thanks for the suggestion, I have some "red electolite jelly" that I use on battery terminals I will give that ago, the terminals are clean and in contact with the bulb.

I will see how it goes and keep an eye open for some L.E.D. light clusters or even land rover rear fittings. Don't make old people mad.

We've just put a set of the LED Autolamps ones (though neither of the ones linked, they're horizontal 12V only ones) on a farm trailer and they're fine. Bit smaller than the gap to put them in but they work and are bright, which is more than can be said for the old incandescent rubber ones which had fallen to bits.

I have had this problem before now with trailers stored in certain places. Turned out on every occasion to be people swapping their dud bulbs for my working ones! It's never happened in secure storage.
