Could be the dreaded immobiliser.
It plays up on mine with similar symptoms.
Turn ignition off for a while.
Lock and unlock a couple of times with the fob.
Try again?

Any 'unusual' and/or additional switches around and about? Under the dash/seat?
Could be an aftermarket immobiliser that could have been knocked?
Ask me how I know!

Lift up the drivers seat and look at the relays under there. Wiggle them around and try again. One of them caused me a problem where the car would cut out and not start. I think it was a yellow relay on mine, related to the glow plugs...? Anyway, give them all a wiggle. They are liable to poor connections on the spade terminal.

The proper fix is to remove the relays and squeeze the spade terminals to make them tighter.

There is a thread on here about it, will have a look for it.

cheers

simon

I had this problem a couple of years ago and the solution was quite simple...
