Squeaking noise when accelerating
Recently I have a squeaking noise when accelerating(sounds like squeking trim). So, in the hunt for the noise, I have;

Replaced the drive belt tensioner
Replaced the idler pulley on the right of the engine (by the turbo intercooler hose)
Replace the drive belt

The noise happens when accelerating and I can also make it happen when not moving(so rules out drive train, etc)

I have one more pulley to replace (the one nearest the cylinder head)

I have a couple of thoughts myself but would like to hear some more.

thanks 1999 Defender TD5 110

Yes, there should be sooty deposits somewhere if it's a manifold problem Thumbs Up 2015 90 XS CSW TDCi - Beautiful

I know this may seem totally illogical but have you checked your propshaft UJ's, if one of the cups is dry, especially if the roads are dry, then early signs can be in the form of a squeak as load is put on them such as acceleration.

I dont think its them I as I can make the noise appear with the car standing still by pressing the loud pedal and giving it some revs. 1999 Defender TD5 110

It was worth a shot, have you tried the old trick of a squirt of WD40 or the like on the back of the pulleys to hopefully isolate if it is a pulley but if you can get a squealing noise when standing still and revving the engine then it more than likely points to exhaust gasses escaping. Does the phenomenon go away when the engine is warm? That usually points to the exhaust manifold. Could be either a snapped stud or just loose. Have a feel around to see if any are missing or loose.

Not tried wd40 but I did put some spray grease onto the bearing before I put it back on. I have does a YouTube video of the noise and just uploading it now.
Certianly notice it when cold, not sure if goes when warmed up, its certainly there during the 10/15 min drive home from work.
One thought was intercooler hoses/intercooler. The hoses are 12months old are silicone ones from BAS
I do have a spare intercooler and this is on my list to replace

I will also check the manifold but not heard any chuffing noises at idle. 1999 Defender TD5 110

To be honest i'd have thought that noise was more bodywork related. Something like a strengthening stay loose or even the bonnet squeaking. A friend had one of the diagonal stays just behind the front grill and in front of the radiator loose and that was so loose it rattled but if something like that is just loose enough to move then it could squeak.
Go around your motor and push and pull on the panels and stand on the corners and see if you can get the squeak. Look in the engine bay to see if there is anything loose or something may be rubbing on the bonnet, look for paint rubbed through. With the panel gaps our vehicles are famous for, it may be a panel rubbing. With all the squeaks and rattles we have identifying a particular one can be a nightmare!

Oddly I do have a rub mark on the top engine cover. Time to pop the bonnet for a trip to work tomorrow and see what happens.

mmm...Trim. Time for investigation. 1999 Defender TD5 110
