Live feed when ignition is off?
Morning!

Can anyone tell me where to locate a live feed that's off when the ignition is on, and on when ignition is off?
I need to put in a flashing LED so no real current draw.

I guess I would be looking in and around the alarm unit/loom somewhere?

Many thanks 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

You can achieve this by taking a battery feed that is controlled by a relay from the cigarette lighter

The relay will need to be normally closed so power is supplied, when the ignition is on the relay will turn power off

have a look at the alarm wiring diagrams, somewhere around the ultrasonics ?

easy enough to test with a multi-meter

Cheers guys,
thought it would be easier to ask about location rather than hunt around in the wrong area!

I knew it would be around the alarm area somewhere Thumbs Up 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

On my previous two defenders I fitted a flashing LED to come on when the ignition was off.

If I remember correctly one of the terminals on the ignition barrel went to earth when turned off. So connecting the LED between that and a permanent live worked for me.

^^as above normal way of fitting them

permament live and switch live both off back of ign switch

ign on 2 lives = no led flash

ign off 1 live and swithched live turns to earth = led flashes

If this is a Puma, go into the drivers seat box and open the black fuse box nearest the rear of the Defender in the seat box.
You'll see some large fuses.
Make sure you disconnect battery before working on it but if you see those fuses look right to the back and you'll see two terminals with screws on.
These are negative and positive permanent live.
Identify the polarity and connect what you want there of course fitting a suitable in-.line fuse on the live feed too. If it's just an LED a 1A would be fine or a 5A if it is a bit more draw.

Okay, it's not in a location that's easiest to acess to where you want it but there is absolutely no loom cutting at all and it's completely reversible and hidden.

You'd have to take the ignition on feed elsewhere though but it might be possible in that location too with some testing.

Might be of use.

Thanks for answers.
I ended up coming off the instrument cluster loom, as it already has the red flashing light under the speedo.
Plus it was close to the led I needed to fit.

Sorry, just realised that they are all lives but you can take an earth off of a ring terminal from a bolt and nut in the near vicinity in the same seatbox.

Is there an ignition live there too in the same box? Never checked.
