Life expectancy of engine?
Hi guys what's the highest mileage a td5 engine will last for, looking at buying a second td5 110 or double cab to go with my 90 don't have the biggest budget in the world but want it to last for a while. Would a good condition high miler say 200,000 mark be worth looking at if everything else good and price right
Thanks in advance for your opinions Thumbs Up

Bit of a piece of string question. Lots of TD5’s clocking up 200.000 k and still going strong, others have done half that and the engines shot. It all depends how the owners have driven it, serviced it and looked after the engine.

The TD5 has several problems, cracked heads, broken dual-mass flywheels and oily injector looms Flywheels go at high mileages, so if it has not been replaced then it’s an expensive job. There can be issues with water and fuel loss on some heads as it’s a common-rail engine with a fuel pressure line in the head casting. Warping heads are another problem and if that is the case will need skimming.

What you have really got to ask yourself is that if a Defender has done that higher mileage probably quite a few parts of the running gear unless having already been replaced will probably need to be replaced For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

At 69K mine still goes between anual services without a top up of oil or water.
Not a damp patch underneath and still pulls like a train.
Just about 'run in' I reckon.

Mine is at 157k, still not run in yet. no leaks, no odd noises or anything.. only oil in the loom which is a quick replacement job that should be done annually - £40 Thumbs Up

Agree mine is just on 100k and is amazing! It is all about how it is treated and maintained and the beauty of it is you can do just that. Defender 90 TD5 County -
You need only two tools in life: WD-40 and duct tape.
If it doesnt move and it should: WD-40.
If it moves and shouldnt: duct tape it.

244,000 so far after nearly 11 years. All original ancillaries apart from the radiator, turbo, intercooler, crank pulley and exhaust manifold. It's been running a Stage 2 tune for most of those miles. I replace the injector loom and fuel pressure regulator every 2 years (48-50,000 miles) as a matter of course.

I've just had it converted to automatic (which I'll start a thread on when it's fully dialed in and I've done a few more miles to provide a proper assessment), and expect to get another 150,000 miles out the engine and at that point expect to replace the head with an improved one from Turners. The bottom-end of these engines appears to be pretty tough but if that needs doing too then I'll just get a complete engine instead.

The only thing that I really keep an eye on is coolant usage. It's been using about a litre every 12,000 miles but it's been doing that for about 160,000 miles and despite numerous attempts I've been unable to trace it.

I keep on top of everything and it does get pampered using genuine or OEM parts - and it does earn it's keep - nearly 25,000 a year commuting, towing the caravan around the UK and Europe. I did look at replacing it with a new Puma or a built-to-order 300Tdi last year, but the financial aspect didn't add up - and SWMBO looked at me like I was planning to sell the family dog Rolling with laughter

So instead I've spent a third of the cost of a new Puma on upgrading the Td5 to the way I want it, hence the Auto box. It already has a Webasto heater, twin fuel tanks, split charge, winch etc so the Auto box is the last step in getting it perfect, at least for us. Dave

Well, I have a confession to make. We sold the Td5 at the grand old age of 11 years and 246,000 miles.

What caused this? Lust and a sense "now or never" after doing the Defender Celebration tour at Solihull.

So we looked at an ex-demo 110 Utility at Guy Salmons - darned thing got sold to someone else in the 45 minutes between asking about it on the phone and travelling there to see it.

So after a bit of negotiation - actually four hours of haggling - we agreed to the purchase of Gracie, a Corris Grey XS station wagon with exactly 5.2 miles on the clock.

So, I shall bow out from this thread with my head held high. Nearly a quarter of a million miles on the Td5 ain't too shabby at all. Bow down Dave

My old D2 commercial is on just over 300k now and still pulls like a train by all accounts. The rest of the vehicle has seen better days but the motors perfect. Head never been off, had a turbo and a few bits but no major surgery. There is an ex SHB 110 around here that gets MOTd the same place as my 2 that was well over 400k last October .........I wouldn't be scared of having a high miler. Harder worked the better IMO. Td5s love grafting and good servicing. Dawdle around in them, use tesco diesel and cheap shyte oil and they won't see 150k without surgery .

About 30 seconds with no oil!

No guarantees with a 200k engine, but if its running today it'll probably run tomorrow - I"d worry more about the chassis and bulkhead, you can always replace an engine.

I've followed this forum for about 5 years and engine failures are rarely discussed!!

Just shy of 120k on mine. No leaks and pulls like a train. Was recently down on power, thought it was fuel pump related and was running rough in the morning on cold starts. Injector seals done and EGR blank and it's back to health! Mr. Green 2001 Td5 CSW (weekend and snow mobile) Plenty of lights, M/T tyres EGR delete, roofrack, swing away wheel carrier, snorkel.
