Where to stop... (Anyone taken a Td5 engine out before?)
I'm shortly going to be replacing the head on my Td5 with an AMC one after the infamous rising oil level.

However look at the other list of things to do, the clutch (will do flywheel as well) needs replacing, and I'm also aware the rear crank seal is peeing oil everywhere, which has led me to think down the lines of just taking the engine out...

Also for peace of mind it would allow me to pull the sump and see if running on contaminated oil has done any harm to the bottom end bearings.

If you have the engine out and the head off why not check that too. Roel

When my clutch goes I will definitely be taking the engine out, I will then re-thread the sump plug and replace the knackered sump gasket and any other jobs that would be a pain with it installed.

I dont think you will have harmed the bottom end, it also might be worth replacing the gearbox input seal whilst its out, they sometimes leak like mad, cost pennies to replace and its a quick and easy job. Thumbs Up 2003 Td5 90

I've had the engine out a couple of times and it's no great shakes at all. Hardest thing is to get the bloody fan off!

Just make sure you have a decent engine hoist. Since you will be changing the flywheel and clutch, you may as well change the rear crank oil as you have to take the sump off to do it anyway.

I doubt you will have damaged the bottom end, unless you have been very unlucky. The Td5 bottom end is pretty rugged so hopefully you should be ok. Perhaps budget for a new radiator while you are at it, and you can forget about big items for a long while then!

Wouldn't bother pulling the sump off looking for debris- take the oil filter off, cut it open and look for any metal in the filter media. A couple of tiny flakes is ok but if it glitters or has white metal or copper in it it's time to investigate further.........

I was the very unlucky one where the bottom end went Evil or Very Mad

Crankshaft had snapped in two pieces Shocked

Have had gear box out a couple of times, all doable with engine crane through door.

Also changed engine using same engine crane.

I was encouraged to have a go having never done anything like this before. It is surprising what you can do and the enjoy, ent you get from doing it yourself Thumbs Up

Yeh, it's obviously had diesel in the oil too long, although nothing else is showing any signs of wear. Will pull the rest of the bearings and have a look. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"
