Hi/Low gear selector
Okay, what's the best way to mangle this control on a new stiff Defender. It's on High and I can't get it into neutral or low. I've tried the two methods in the handbook. It's only three days old and I need to show the beast who's the boss. Maybe I need a trainer? Laughing

On an 'old' Td5 Disco I believe there were two methods.

1. Stop the vehicle, dip the clutch, engage 1st/2nd and then (whilst still pressing the clutch down) try and engage the low box. If it struggles gently bring the clutch up whilst still applying pressure to the lever. She should engage without moving forward.

2. I think this involved slowing to an 'almost halt' and stuffing the lever forward and hoping for the best.

On my PUMA, I have no problems engaging high and low ratio's. But I could not get the centre-diff to engage (well the light to come on). LR dealer told me that the linkage was not properly aligned and fitted a new Transfer box! If yours is new I woudl get it into the idiots to fix.

Lastly, a UK mail order off-road specialist did warned me check the transmission fluid levels in the PUMA as the factory apparently have a bod reputation for not really adhering to the levels ie some have been very low!

I wont disagree - but they dont actually fill the cars.

They stick a load of pipes onthe parts and scan the barcode and hit fill - the computers do the rest Thumbs Up quite impressive to see - especially the range rovers with the standard rig Mike

Probably pressed fill twice, and the rest overflowed.

You want to see the number of batteries left connected from Friday to monday that are thrown! Mike

Thanks harveyg77, I'll try that now. Maybe off to dealers as I have some other issues now...

Personally I found the high/low change and diff. lock levers easier to use on our current Puma than on any other Land Rover I have driven. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

the trick is to always have the main gearbox in a gear when you do it. The clutch can then be used to aid main gearbox alignment.

Low - High can be done on the move once the knack has been found, but as with High to low i would come to stop first until it has been perfected! Cheers

Usually what I do is put my landy in neutral on a slight slope of some sort and depress the clutch, then I give the transfer box a good push from high range to low range and let the vehicle just roll back a little and it seems to slip in nicely. Not sure if the way i do it is recommend, but it works.

Best of luck.

no offence mean't, but no its not recommended, certainly not by LR anyway.

if your in neutral there is no way of aligning the main gearbox if its out a bit either. Cheers
