How much are the Disco transfer box upgrades ?
Hi new to this forum, have a TD5 that I use daily driver....having some bits done to make it easier to drive 250 miles twice a week...this transfer box upgrade looks sensible...is it a DIY job or best left to the experts? and .....is it expensive??? currently the world at 65mps and booming vibro plant not helping my cause for keeping the truck!

I had the conversion carried out by Aschcrofts in Luton and well worth the money. From memory it was £725 all in with courtesy car. Would recommend.

I just picked a box up for £21 and as I was having the clutch done they swapped over the bits (beware it's not a straight swap) and put it back together at the same time so probably only cost me £70 all in with decent new oil.

Thanks for speedy response! I asked the same question on another unamed forum and got 75 views.. and no comments! So thanks chaps and ...err right 700+ smackers or £80 if your handy...might have to ponder that for a while.....

Blew my budget buying it...three days after it arrived the fuel pump started really high pitched whine...checked forums etc suggested fuel going into sump...checked oil level...above the line but not a by a large degree...but it was serviced in Feb so should be bang on....so am looking at replacing injector seals...my experience on other motors has me worried as they were impossible to remove (the injectors) so whilst looking at it and scratching my head I though...lets get this EGR thing done, Loom other sensors and fuel filter etc..which may make it a tad more bearable at 65 and then read this forum...saw the transfer box upgrade ..and thought ..lets get it all done at once!

So thats like 2K !!!

Most transfer ratios on td5's are 1.4 but mine had a 1.6 transfer box in so it was very noisy on the motorway, so the 1.2 disco box has made a big difference to noise and I'm waiting till this tank of fuel is finished to see if I get a good difference on mpg too.

Ahhhh, 2k now but....
As a result of getting the transfer box done, I thought, great it now cruises happily at 70 but takes a bit longer to get there - not that much longer but enough to think I needed a remap. SO I then got an Alive stage 1 remap, filter and EGR removal done as well - all in about £500 or so.

Have to say its now very driveable, less cog swapping and the other day I got 28mpg although I was using super diesel which has had a noticable effect on mpg to the tune of 15% for the better.

Enjoy your money pit - its great !

Had mine done last month, as a drive in drive out at a local independents using the Ashcroft kit. I can't remember if the price included VAT, but I was quoted £600 (had a large service done at the same time so its not easy to determine the cost now).

Much much much much better on the motorway now - whereas before it felt like I was thrashing it to maintain 65-70, it now comfortably sits at *cough* a higher speed, with reduced noise.

MPG wise though, I've actually seen a drop. Before I was getting up to 32mpg (2005 Td5 90), I'm struggling to get it above 30 at the moment. Might be something to do with the higher speed mind... All in all - a very worthy upgrade.

That's why mine stuggles to do much more than 70mph then - I think it must have the 1.6 transfer box.

I made a few £££'s on mine, I bought a good used one for £100 and sold mine for £150 Very Happy

As I ended up doing it myself, after a couple of seals, oil etc I was still in profit!

1.6 were only fit to early 2.5 NAD 110s

All later 200/300/TD5s should have 1.4 boxes

Some of the early TD5's had the 1.667 sticker put on in error, all were 1.410's,

When I got by TD5 (built Oct 2003) I wondered what transfer box it had on it. After investigation it was a 1.4. I used the Serial number and the cross referenced it to this link http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/in...oductId=45.

Hope this helps Smile

This may actually be my first post on here but as this forum is an excellent information source I've been a lurker for ages.

Not long after getting my 2004 Defender I had the transfer box swapped. I bought a disco 2 box with diff lock from a scrapper and had it changed by a local Landover mechanic, there were a few minor speedo drive swaps to be made between the two boxes but apparently it was straightforward. It was well worth doing and makes going over 60 far less worrying. The change typically drops the rev's by 15% so cruising around 70 is no bother.
My 90 has always been good on fuel as I usually get about 33 mpg or 320 - 340 miles between fills. Total cost was about £300, I haven't bothered with a remap yet because it isn't really necessary for me but I do fancy a bit more acceleration.

I was going to go for the Ashcroft gear ratio swap in the original box but after consideration swapping the box worked out as the easiest and cheapest option for me, 30,000 miles later it's still the best mod I did apart from changing the clutch pedal spring!
