Gear Selection Query
I have a 1999 Defender 90 Td5, that has just been put back on the road following a comprehensive rebuild.

I did not drive the car prior to the rebuild and therefore have no experience of any potential querks.

I have found a small issue regarding the gearbox. When moving slowly and then stopping, such as parking the car, it is reluctant to let me take it out of reverse gear. It appears worse when the car has been run for a while ie warm.

I have to push at the lever a couple of times before it releases.

Any one know what this is likely to be - the fluid in the gearbox is new, the clutch is new, and the clutch slave cylinder has been bled correctly and has no leaks.

Appreciate any helpful comments - Thank you.

I put ATF Dexron in the main gearbox, and gear oil 80/90's in the transfer box.

Are there better options?

Hi,

Dont think ATF is recommended anymore for the R380 which I am assuming you have as its a TD5.

I use Redline MTL which is very similair to MTF94 which is the recommended oil but much better when cold. This is more expensive though at about £10 a litre.

Hi,

MTF 94 is the recommended oil.

I use Difflock Evo 1, fully synthetic oil, which has transformed the box and has made it relatively quiet and smooth.

Evo 1 is expensive at circa £20/ltr.

It is important to use the correct oil in these boxes, so worth a review?

Good luck.

A number of years ago my 200 tdi went in for a service and then the gearbox became really difficult to use. Wrong oil was used. Once this was rectified the gear box returned to silky smooth operation-well as silky smooth as the gear change on a 200 Tdi gets! Always use what the handbook states not what the garage happen to have in stock. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
