It is the term often used to refer to the immobiliser unit.

Hi everyone,
I had this very same problem on my 300tdi Discovery, and it's a much bigger job getting to the faulty spider lead because the dashboard has to be removed for access apparently. I simply wired a fused supply, hid this in the vehicle loom, to a hidden switch, and 8 years later it's still working perfectly, and it's a great security device, because it would take a would be thief ages to work out what I've done, as the factory fitted alarm still works as it should, just no power to the fuel solenoid Regards Ged Retired from the day job and now self employed - what a life!! |

Well, so far so good. No long journeys yet but a 44 mile round trip to Goodwood today and a few days ago near Brighton, so probably 35 miles then and all ok so far.

As a final update, I'm happy to report all seems well and following a 90 mile round trip today I think we've got the problem sorted. Thanks again, it was certainly the spider at fault, an easy fix when you know how!

Check the spade connection on your fuel stop solenoid first. I'm no auto electrician but having taken the spider unit apart, even is could see the tale tale signs of dry soldered joints mention by others in this thread.

Hi everybody,
I've similar problem with my 300tdi 2005 defender. Engine is cutting out on the road without any sign, especially when it is not warmed up to normal temparature. If i'm not wrong (due to the panic i was in during the situation) no warning light (oil/battery) came on at total three cases. And after those three cutting outs, engine ran normally with the first attempt. So it might not be the stop solenoid based problem i guess. And the vehicle isn't equipped with immobiliser or alarm. What shall i check? Any recommendations? Cheers |

Hi Schweps,
In my experience, a sudden cutting out is almost certainly an electrical issue. If it was a fuelling issue, (pump problem or blocked filters) etc, the engine tends to be poor starting/run badly/stuttering or loss of power before stalling. To isolate the solonoid from a wiring problem, simply wire a supply direct to the solonoid. If it still has the problem it's the solonoid, if not it's the wiring. I stand correcting, but shouldn't a 2005 be a TD5 not a Tdi? And if it is a 2005 model, wouldn't it be fitted with both an alarm and immobiliser? We had 2005 TD5 station wagons at work, and they certainly were fitted with both? Hope you get it sorted Regards Ged Retired from the day job and now self employed - what a life!! |

Thanks for your reply Ged,
My vehicle has been produced by Otokar/Turkey under Land Rover license. So engine and other options may vary. Yesterday, after diesel sedimenter has been cleaned and diesel filter has been replaced, i've faced with the same issue again. And this time i watched out for any warning light till the vehicle stops but no light came on. And again engine started with the first attempt. So could it be an ignition problem? Cheers. Senol |
