May be a faulty immobilizer? This thread may be applicable, though the location of the spider is different in the Defender (behind the instrument panel, as opposed to behind the radio panel in the Discovery 300 Tdi. Cheers, Vincent

if it cuts out dead, it sounds electrical. might be worth getting a spare stop solenoid to carry, if it fails completely your not going anywhere! My 109 thread

Did this on mine , it's the alarm spider which is a black fag packet sized box in the battery seat box . I had a garage sort mine but apparently it just needs taking apart and re-soldering .

Thanks for the replays so far. It has the standard alarm activated by the key fob. I'm not so sure that has an immobiliser built in. 1 wire to solenoid.

What year is the vehicle?
I had a similar albeit occasional problem with a 300Tdi back in the day, I thought it was a loose connection on the stop solenoid but even after that was sorted the problem still occurred, a new solenoid cured it for good. Stop solenoid, dodgy wire(squeeze up with pliers) or solenoid. The dash lights will come on because the engine has stopped and alternator isn't charging and the oil pump isn't pumping 'cause the engine isn't running.

Thanks guys, I know where to look now. Best place to buy a new stop solenoid? It's a 1998 by the way.

Just had a look and seen that I do have the black box under the passenger seat, so I might investigate that as well Michael H. I'll fit a new solenoid as I guess they are relatively cheap and if it happens again! I then know it's very likely to be the "spider"
Thanks again all! ![]() |

Ok, so here's an update which I'm hoping might help other owners in the future. I replaced the fuel stop solenoid, an easy job and have driven the car on a number of occasions but the other week it cut out again on a 40 mile journey. Never seems to cut out on short journeys! Anyway, it started soon after and all was ok on the return leg.
Clearly my issue was not with the fuel stop solenoid, so I took out the "spider" unit to have a look and lo an behold, there's 2 if not 3 dry soldered joints in evidence. I've had these re soldered by Derek Alfrey and also purchased a by pass kit as a safeguard. It's all back together now so I'm hoping that resolves the occasional cutting out problem! |

Yeah hopefully Michael
![]() Was your very intermittent? I mean, perfectly ok for a while, then a cut out and then fine for a few more trips? I really hope it's sorted now! Cheers Mike |
