Whining sound from stereo when playing music
Hi all,

I drive a 2007 Defender. I have replaced the cigarette lighter in the dashboard with this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360886729112?ssP...1497.l2649
It has a dual USB port, 1 with 1000 mAmp output and the second with 2100 mAmps. My phone has a 2000 mAmps battery so it should be able to be charged (faster) by the 2.1 Amps socket. Which it does, so no problems at all in that field.

The problem comes when I use the standard LR radio aux port to listen to music from my phone while charging it. The Whining sound keeps getting louder and louder to the point that it is the only think I can hear. With the 1Amp port the effect is much less and barely audible.

The socket is wired properly and the cable to the radio from the phone's mini jack is a standard male-male cable

Can someone give me a hint?

thanks ciao Smile My Land Rover doesn't have problems... it has features to keep me entertained doing DIY

I had a similar problem with devices connected to a charger in the socket and connected via the AUX IN port. Power for the socket comes from the dash harnes and something evidently denerates significant noise in the harness. I never figured out what it was (there are many possible sources in a modern vehicle). It may even be the power adaptor ir charger itself.

In the end I wired an additional socket straight (via a new fuse) to the battery, and this was entirely satisfactory. I later replaced the LR radio unit with a much better setup so the question became irrelevant anyway.

Thanks blackwolf. I should think of bringing a new line from the battery but i'd rather not do that as I want the socket to be under ignition key. And in regards to the radio... when I bought my Defender 2nd hand it had a beautiful Kenwood radio which I replaced for the original LR one... crazy, right? David Whittaker on here had similar issues to long ago, not sure what he did about it or the cure though if any?
I haven't had this myself but I do gave a 12v mini EL wire inverter and that makes a high pitch noise when on.
I think it's just chargers that differ really.

I believe this issue is caused by a ground loop issue, caused by the DC-DC 12to5v voltage conversion in the charger. 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread

thanks rallysteve,
ok it's a ground loop issue. How do I fix it? Use different grounds for radio and charger? My Land Rover doesn't have problems... it has features to keep me entertained doing DIY

Hero!!! Thumbs Up

not sure how I use it though. Normally RCA connectors are for sound connections, right? so, does it go on the radio audio output or on the radio power supply? Or on the transformer supply? Decisions, decisions...

Sorry guys while I am pretty good with screwdrivers and spanners my electrical knowledge still has plenty of space for improvement... My Land Rover doesn't have problems... it has features to keep me entertained doing DIY

On the input.
3.5mm mini-jack -> ground loop isolator -> head unit.

I can't help feeling there must be a better way though. I wonder what would happen if the 5V supply's 0V rail was connected to the vehicle 0V. I'm confused as to why it wouldn't be actually.

I had a similar problem

Every morning when I drove to work there was a horrible whining coming from my radio?
I never used to have this problem and never had it on any of my older cars.
Anyway it was mainly between the music.

Turned out an easy cure for me though as found I cant stand Nick Grimshaw on Radio 1 when he took over so I changed channel for 6.30- 10.00 and the problem was solved and the whining gone.

Hope it helps for you as could be the cause Thumbs Up Defender puma dormobile camper
