my starter is on its way out I think, you go to it, turn the key and it will just click. if you try it a couple or three times it will start. does any one know if this starter motor will fit 2.4tdci 2007. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Transit-Starter-...3cc3197e25 many thanks, Harry NO ROAD..........EXCEPT FOR LANDROVER

Try connecting a booster on the battery & see if it cranks. Could be lack of voltage to the battery, check the terminals are clean & tight. I had the same symptoms the other week & turned out the positive connector was loose on the battery terminal.

CHECK YOUR BATTERY CONNECTIONS FIRST! Especially the earth.
Nearly replaced my starter one time, in end it was just a naff connection on the -ve which couldn't take the voltage. Made a loud click and wouldnt start sometimes. Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Another things to look at, is the back of the solenoid.
On the back of the solenoid there is a metal bar that is bolted to the solenoid that runs to the starter, the bar is covered in a white sleeve (it is clear on the eBay link you posted) and carries the heavy current required for cranking once the solenoid has been activated. That nut on the solenoid that holds the bar in place can: a)work its way loose or b) get covered in water / dirt and corrode enough that it spoils the contact between the solenoid and the bar to the starter motor. The solenoid will continue to make the 'click' noise as the solenoid fires, but the actual starter will become intermittent. This happened on my Defender last year and the starter has been fine since the contact was cleaned up. A garage I spoke to said they had seen similar on a couple of other TDCi defenders. Also check the power cable to the starter and your earth connections, if either are a bit dodgy, the solenoid will fire, but the resistance will be too high to make the starter turn over consistently. |

I see you have a 2007
On my 2008 the starter failed due to clutch dust migrating into it. Starter out, dismantling, starter cleaning all back in and we are now 2 years later Fiddly job to get the starter out but not that bad after all. ![]() |

well I've had the starter off this morning and had it apart. it was full of dust, I suppose it stands to reason really as I replaced the clutch in Feb. this year and the bell housing was full of dust too. so after cleaning it out with a paint brush and plenty of contact cleaner, it now spins faster and all seems to be peachy! thanks for your help folks
