Mine rarely creeps up to half way - only usually when towing. Normally it will be very reactive to driving styles and will often sit between 1/4 and 1/3 the way up. Sometimes lower if crawling, only recently has it stayed at 1/4 - 1/3 without dropping like it usually does when down to crawling speeds.

Although I must admit - before I cleared a blockage out of the fuel cooler lines the gauge went straight to half after only a short run & then the coolant smell would appear, which brought around my initial issues when I started towing. I've since (touch wood) had no real overheating issues.

I'd be interested to hear where the O/P's gauge is usually sat when up to temperature.

I've a suspicion with my thermostat - not sure it's doing it's job as it should at the moment. Are the coolant pipes rock hard all the time prior to changing and have they reduced in pressure afterwards? Possibly a bit too soon to ask you if you've not had chance for a road test.. Mine gets up to running temp (usually about 1/4 up the gauge) and when I check lately the pipes are pretty hard.

I'm no mechanic , hence my difficulty diagnosing the thermostat issue, but I'd say if you suspect thermostat just replace it. It cost me Ł18 or something and it's not a hard job, just a little fiddly. It's down the passengers side of the radiator and you ll find it easiest if you quickly unscrew the plastic fan cover (takes 20 secs honest) Cheers, David

I'll also feedback what mine does after replacing the stat, after all it may have been running a little hot for a while and just peaked more recently... Cheers, David

Has yours been fixed?

Don't know yet.
Now the weather is quite cold and my problem arise with medium-high temps (over 25°C).
Anyway I will put the ODB to see the temperature after the change.

Cheers! Eduardo

Had coolant temp problems with mine. Overheating. Scanguage showed temps upto 105 whilst instrument gauge sat at halfway, then gauge shot up and limp mode. Radiator stone cold but pipes to thermostat hot. Indi changed thermostat. Now temp gauge rock steady at halfway. Scanguage shows temp varying between 75 and 85 depending on driving type, speed etc. off to the Swiss Alps in 5 weeks. Whistle LANDYWATCH

^ exactly the same as me, temp now sits at 85 max having been up to 109.3 max before I replaced the thermostat! Cheers, David

Good to hear this has sorted yours David, the needle hardly budged this morning on my drive out to work - something not right there! I'll test the thermostat this weekend but I've now got my suspicions on the cylinder head / head gasket leaking exhaust gasses into the coolant.

Hoping this at the worst is a failed gasket and not a warped or cracked head!

Surely head damage etc would cause overheating not running cold?

I'd check thermostat- they're cheap and easy to replace, and if it's stuck open then it'll struggle to let the engine get warm if guess (opposite of mine being stuck closed!) Cheers, David
