Dif Lock light
Hi all,

New on here and got my first Defender 90.

The diff lock doesn't come on when I put it in Low or High box, shouldn't it come on in Low and how much does it cost to fix?

Thanks

Tim

The diff lock light should come on in either high or low box - which model Defender do you have ?

Edit: Just checked your previous posts and can see you were looking for a TD5.

Do you mean you are putting the transfer box lever in to the 'low' position and no light comes on or are you sliding the lever across into 'Diff lock' and no light is coming on ?

Mine doesn't by purely knocking the lever over.

If I drive forward a few metres, it then comes on. Try that?

Hi its a 2001 TD5, I've already slid it across so its when I put it into, high or low, I have driven forward and backwards a few meters

Forgive me if I'm teaching you to suck eggs but I think you maybe confusing the use of the diff lock.

On the fuse box cover there should be a diagram for difflock / high / low use.

Just moving the lever into low will NOT turn on any warning lights, you'll know its in low as the gearing is much much lower

The warning light on the dash should illuminate when you move the lever sideways (not forward or backward) into 'Diff lock', this can be used in high or low (Google or read your handbook) and will lock the front and rear diffs together

The light often won't come on straight away, even when you slide it across to put it in Diff-Lock. You will need to travel a short distance so it engages the lock.

Likewise when you unlock the diff, you should do it while still on loose ground or if not you may need to reverse a short distance to "unwind" the transmission and allow the diff to disengage.

Hope that makes sense..!

Cheers

Simon

depending on the previous use it might be stuck - the previous owner of mine never used diff lock and as a result it refuses to go into lock unless you crawl underneath and give the lever a smack from below Mad

It could also have an early 1.2 disco transfer box, which probably dose not have the electrics, meaning they will never come on Thumbs Up

Mine only comes on after it's immersed in water! Faulty wiring methinks.

Oh, did you know that William Shakespeare invented the word "methinks"? There's a pub quiz winner for ya! It wasn't me!

I too have a 2001 TD5 my diff lock light wouldn't come on either,I eventually worked out the linkage from the lever to the box was seized through lack of use, half an hour stripping it down loosening it off re lubricating it and putting it back together solved the problem.
I understand it's a common problem with the linkage exposed to all the road crap, salt moisture mud and grit.
Another solution could be to check the switch located on the transfer box, mine needed a slight adjustment out, to prevent it from stopping the diff lock engaging.
Once sorted make a point of using it a couple of times a month just to keep it freed up.
Hope this helps
If I remember there's a good example on YouTube.
DRW I built a garage for my Mini
With a place for everything and everthing in its place.
Ten years down the line there's a Mini in there somewhere, and Censored all's where it should be!!!! Ho hum
