The Goodyear MTR have as much grip as general grabber at. They are good at clocking up the miles wouldn't argue with that.

Generals just don't suit my driving and how I use the defender.

I had a tomb raider and I really didn't like the way it drove and got stuck everywhere, always had stones clicking away. The only tyres I've ever had punctures with. I then got a 90 which after a while changed the tyres for Goodyear MTR which I found really good. Wish I had put them on the tomb raider. Bit dodgy in the wet and noisy but they do the job I need them to do. The STT is a very noisy tyre and even worse in the wet, but great in the thick mud.

Have a look at Goodyear AT/SA's as an alternative, I had a set and they were great, very good traction and if you shop around you might be able to save a few £'s, the reviews from people who've had them are very good too. I replaced them with Duratrac's which are also great tyres but more a aggressive pattern.

BFG AT's or Conti's would be my choice for road-only tyres, I currently run Goodyear MTRs - good on and off road Thumbs Up

We run factory fit continentals (235.85.16) and 99% on-road use - they produce little road noise and tread wear is very low. Wet grip good but have not had the opportunity to try out the snow grip yet.

I have had the factory Contis on now for several months. Very quiet and great road manners, but what has impressed me most is how they perform offroad for a tread pattern that looks less than aggressive. They have been used in anger setting up the night stages at a very wet Walters Arena and never missed a beat and more recently have been doing stirling service driving around the farm on grass and mud checking on the new born lambs. Wherever they have reached their limits of traction I can honestly say that an MT would have maybe got me a few feet further but no more. And then I may have gotten just that bit too far to get out again!

I love em.

Let the haters hate them if it means they come up cheap as take offs.

I've got Conti cross contact 235/85/16's on my old pick up, I must admit that they are great tyres, it's just a pity they don't make them in a 265/75/16 though.
