yep good point, i used our 'power washer' - kinda somewhere between the two i guess, no danger of damage. It looked pretty clean anyway...

yep going to get down to chris when i can anyway, will ask him to de map so i can have a quick test drive and then see if any different. Cheers, David

It could well be a knackered viscous fan. Your description of no problems on a motorway and then overheating when you slow down reminded me of a similar problem that I had with a Stage 1 V8 years ago that was fine when moving fast but would overheat when crawling along. In my case it turned out that somebody had fitted the fan backwards so it was drawing warm air from the engine over the rad. The relevant bit though, is that moving at speed overcame the problem by just pushing air through the grill. In your case, if the fan isn't locking up properly then heat soak after slowing down from a higher speed or when under load could produce a similar result.

They easiest way to test it is first try to turn the fan by hand when the engine is cold (and off, obviously). This will give you a feel for the unlocked resistance. Then get the engine good and hot and try again. It should then be really stiff to turn compared to when cold. To be honest though, you should be able to hear the thing working as it sounds like a vacuum cleaner when it's locked up. Darren

the fan is definitely working, at least at tick over.

Think ill start with the map and then the thermostat, then ill start worrying if its neither of them...! Cheers, David

Viscous fans will turn all of the time. They are not like electric fans that turn on and off. They operate by the fluid in the hub thickening as they get hotter, transferring more torque to the fan blades, much like a torque converter in an automatic gearbox. Hence, it will feel much stiffer to turn by hand when hot than when cold. Darren

ok so it could be turning at tick over (it didn't look very fast!) but then not increasing speed as required? That could be possible...

Why isn't it just belt driven haha? they never make it easy! Cheers, David

purchased a new viscous fan & coupling anyway. It was such a good price that i'd probably get my money back anyway if it doesn't fix the problem...

heres to hoping!

learn something new everyday.. cheers LRA Cheers, David

yes just realised that thinking it through.

my brain made the "I've not heard of that, therefore confusing expensive magical engineering complexity" connection... Cheers, David

They easiest way to test it is first try to turn the fan by hand when the engine is cold (and off, obviously).

sometimes when you first start from stone cold the fan is noisier that's the sound you want when its blowing harder , they free up after running a few seconds then as it gets hotter they lock up or drag harder

just out of interest
fitting a fan backwards wont make it blow the other way ,but will make it less efficient because of the shape of the blades , if its rotation is changed it will blow the other way , but which way it has to turn to be most efficient is down to the shape or scoop of the blade
if its a electric fan wiring it up the wrong way or fitting wrong

Munch, I know what you mean, but we discovered the problem purely by chance whilst standing in front of the grill and feeling warm air being pushed out. I guess it must have been some quirk of the curvature of the fan blades, but turning it around solved the problem, which I was very greatful for at the time! Darren

As DW will do and to try to solve the problem (same as davidwhittaker) I decide to change the Viscous fan and the thermostat (already ordered from one of our site supporters).

I hope that will solve the problem because is drive me crazy.

We will see Neutral . Eduardo
