Exhaust banging on gearbox
Hi guys

One of my first little niggly jobs I need to do is to stop the brand new exhaust banging on the gearbox, I assume when it was a 2.5 td the exhaust was a smaller O.D. from a 200tdi exhaust fitted now as the 90 has been fitted with a 200tdi engine but the exhaust is too rigid and can't move it as there is no room between the gearbox and exhaust so I am thinking although the engine and gearbox mounting rubber's look ok I think I will replace them but undecided wether to fit 2.5td engine mounting rubbers and gearbox mounting rubber's as fitted now or wether to fit 200tdi engine mounting rubber's and gearbox rubbers.

has anyone else had this problem and what was your solution Smile Graham

Sorry, not had this issue.

Did have a problem on my TD5 after I belted the centre box on a massive rock. Not only did it flatten the centre box, but the force was so great it bent the rear section and also the front down tube. My point is that you might want to check the other sections to see if they are damaged and affecting the clearances.

Good luck

Cheers

Simon

Does it have the standard defender engine or is is a discovery engine? In which case which pipe does it use from the turbo down pipe? (picture would be helpful) as I know some conversion kits are better than others and if its not angled properly or bodged in it can change the angle of the rest of the exhaust pipe and thus the rubbers which will lead to it banging or rubbing.

Also check the heat shield under the clutch slave as if this has rotated round or got bent could cause the same problem.

Hi Simon

Its been fitted with a brand new defender 200tdi exhaust full system with a bracket that it welded to the exhaust and then bolted to the engine hence why its so rigid Smile Graham

Its a defender 200tdi with a full new exhaust system fitted with a bracket that is welded to the down pipe then bolts to the engine, hope this helps and I will check the slave cylinder heat shield is not damaged or loose Wink Graham

on my old 200tdi I fitted a flexi joint in exhaust ( cut pipe then slotted flexi in they tac welded so it was in right place then removed to weld round )
you can buy just the flexi joint from most motor factors, good make are bosal ones
measure pipe as they do lots of sizes

made a diffrence to vibration through body
