transfer box ratios
I have a 1988 csw fitted with defender 200tdi and gearbox and a discovery transfer box. I am running 750s.

being a genuine camel trophy vehicle which I am then adding to for camping trips (roof tent, fridge ect) it is a rather heavy 110 and I am struggling to keep to 60 on the slightest of inclines. I was in Gloucestershire a few weeks ago and a steep hill had me in first and nearly had to reach for low box. I think the disco transfer box is too much for it so want to go to the standard ratio transfer box for a 1991 -93 200tdi csw. what ratio box am I looking for and is there any indicator on the transfer case as to what ratio is contained within?

Hi the standard defender box is a 1.4 ratio and there is a label on them to indicate this. I also believe you can use the serial number to workout the gearing.

One thought though - as far as I am aware the transfer box ratios only really effect your take off in first gear and top end. If you are finding you have to change down going up hill, this won't necessarily improve with different ratios. In fact the only negative I have ever heard is that it can be difficult to get away at the lights if you are towing heavy loads with a 1.2 transfer box (and a TDI or non remapped TD5). Let's face it there are/were thousands of 200tdi discos out there that were OK?

Are you sure there is not an issue with your engine being down on power?

A Disco transfer box will affect all high range ratios.

Discoverys were fitted with smaller tyres than Defenders to offset the higher gearing. They're also significantly more aerodynamic, which makes a big difference above 50mph or so. Darren

Are you absolutely sure the engine is running as well as it can? I would suggest checking it out, preferably on a rolling road before changing the drive train ratios. Changing the transfer box ratios is normally done to produce a higher top speed or lower revs for a set speed. It has no effect on engine power output and it would seem in your case either the engine is down on power or the vehicle is overloaded. Whistle LANDYWATCH

Yes to both, depending year / spec. 235's will have a 70 aspect ratio, which is essentialy the same diameter as 205's. Darren

well if the 110 is overloaded best have a word with land rover special vehicles, they specced and built it. it is currently unloaded and standard camel spec with the addition of a roof tent.

the 110 goes well once on the flat, had it above legal speed, but as soon as a slight incline is reached it just drops off. for this reason I believe the ratio is too high.

so a 200tdi has a 1.4 ratio transfer box? is this different to the earlier 2.5 diesel and turbo diesel? does a 90 have a different ratio to a 110?

I,ve owned 3 90,s all have had the 1.4 transfer box 1st was a Td, 2nd a 300Tdi,3rd a Td5.

I believe the N/A diesel had the 1.6 box,

Once knew a chap who put a 1.2 box in a N/A diesel 110 rendering 5th gear to downhill use only ! 2005 Td5 90 XS

I think you want the 1.4

A 200tdi doesn't really have the poke to pull a disco box. A friend is taking one out of his 90, to go back to the standard 1.4, for the same reasons.
