Oil in the loom
So I'm gonna change the injector harness.

but can't / won't change the loom.

My question is if I fix the source (inj harness) how long before the loom washes itself out?

and.. is the Oil in the wire? or just the Loom? Presume to make it to the plug it's inside the copper itself?

Is it not traveling along the insulation inside the outer wrap of insulation that keeps the wires together and then just creeps out when the individual wires reach the plug?

No, it runs down inside the insulation in the interstices between the inividual copper strands.

When I sorted my Disco 2, I cleaned the ECU connector weekly for about 4 weeks after which no further oil emerged.

Mkae sure you seal the connector on the new harness properly before fitting it though.

My td5 has gone lumpy as well. I checked for oil in loom, found plenty in the connector on the cambox and just a few drops in the red ecu plug. Cleaned both with break cleaner, things only got worse so i'm thinking of getting a new injector loom. Before i do so i'd like to make sure i understand: why cleaning the old one and sealing its connector with oil resistant silicon gel would not do the trick?

Fortunately mine went lumpy before any oil got as far as the connector.
Easy job to change.
Great thing was the engine ran better than it had for a couple of years.

If you could clean the old injector harness well enough this probably would work, but for the time and hassle involved it is probably more cost-effective to fit a new one. Different story with the engine harness, which is expensive and complex to fit, but which LR recon needs to be replaced as well.

In actual fact the oil only causes problems when it reaches connectors so provided that you can stop the entry of oil into the harness int he first place (by sealing the plug in the cambox) and clean the residue as it migrates out of the harness for a short while, it should be fine.

One of the few design flaws on an otherwise excellent engine.

When I changed mine, oil stopped seeping after about a week.

Trim the insulation that comes from the injector loom (done mine close to the ecu). Blobed solder onto the copper strands. That will stop the wire from running down into the ecu insulation tape and bobs your uncle so to speak.
