Fuel gauge

Ok so a few weeks ago I replaced the fuel pump in my Defender, I bought a disco one as that is all the local dealer had in at the time and I was in a bit of a hurry.

I changed the wire arm and float over from the defender pump to the new disco one. (I believe that's the only difference)

Turned on the ignition and the gauge showed about 1/4 of a tank more than it did before I changed the pump. I had guessed that the 100,000 mile old sender on the old pump may have been worn and displaying less fuel than there was.

The gauge ( until last week) always seemed to show more fuel than I'd expect for a given mileage but again I thought that was due to the shiny new sender and pump.

Anyway after filling up last week, and since having done 170 miles, the gauge is still reading full, now I know that isn't the case!

So basically what I'm asking is, why is the fuel gauge now constantly reading full?

Think fuel gauge sender is different in the two tanks, not just the wiring. Diesel Jim's your man on this topic, I'm sure he will be along soon.

You have to change the whole sender unit not just the arm for it to read properly. Its easy enough to do, just note which way the wiring plugs into the pump unit at the top before you change it over. (Assuming of course that you havwn`t thrown the origianal pump away!

I have kept the original pump but that doesn't explain why the gauge worked for a couple of weeks before it stuck on full.

It sound like the float arm has stuck in the fully up position giving you a full reading all the time. The gauge will go back to reading empty when you switch off as that is the default position when it is not getting power. You will have to take the pump out to check this but as its a bit fiddly to get out chances are that you will bump the float arm and it will unstick when you are trying to remove the pump! With the pump out you can move the float arm up and down by hand and see if it sticks in the up position. Was that the first time that you have fillled the tank right up since changing the pump?

I've been over some fairly rough roads here in Devon with the tank half empty which I would have thought would have dislodged the float. I have brimmed the tank about 3 times since replacing the pump, as I said all was working ok for those tanks.

When I have changed the in tank fuel pump on my D2 TD5, I have placed the new one not wery well in the tank - it was not straight down, but a bit o one side. Pump and engine was working fine, but the fuel gauge was not right. So try to check yours. I have several times replaced the sensor between pumps, without any problems. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

only need to change the "arm", nothing else.

I found i had to fiddle a little bit to make sure the arm didn't catch on anything and jam up.
