Hi all,
My 90 TD5 failed it's NCT (The Irish version of the MOT) and I wanted to get some advice / confirm parts before I went and bought anything, Below is a screenshot of the Failings;  Click image to enlarge The agent said that the Mountings of the Shock Absorbers were worn and needed replacing - are these the correct items? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320972860485?ssP...1438.l2648 Also he said the Locking Device on the Steering Linkage was missing (he said this was a Pin/Clip) I can't seem to find one on the net, does anyone know where to buy one? Also on the Chassis Number - again he couldn't see it, but researching it there seems to be 2-3 places, are these correct? 90, 110, 130 & Defenders: Found in the front corner of the windshield Stamped on plate Riveted to the top of the brake pedal box in the engine compartment Stamped on the right-hand side of the chassis forward the spring mounting turret Where to find the VIN The VIN plate is located on the brake pedal box in the engine compartment. First one is difficult, did the tester not point out the exact problem area?
Second one, does he mean a split pin? Third - the VIN should be in those three places, the easy ones to make sure of are the plate in the window and the one of top of the pedal box. Have you checked they are there? 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

The NCT testers can be quite annoying and will not talk to you at all or point out the problems unfortunately.
I'd say the top bushes of the shocks are worn and not the actual mountings, they probably look cracked/perished. Don't know about the second one. If you have a steering guard/waxoyl it might be obstructing the vin from view on the chassis, you may need to remove so he can check the VIN. Thanks Martin, No he didn't / wouldn't point out the area - typical! Yes I think he means a split pin alright - couldn't think of the correct name though! Shock absorber bushes seem to wear rapidly on the rear of defenders particularly the lower ones so would start with them.
The chassis number is on the OUTSIDE of the main chassis rail just ahead of the front axle, you should be able to see it with the wheels on right lock. It is also on a plate rivetted to the top of the brake pedal box under the bonnet and on a small plate on the nearside of the dashboard which should be visible through the windscreen. 2005 Td5 90 XS Steve |

Thanks Andy!! Cheers - I'll look into getting a split pin / nylock nut! Nope tax disc is out of the way there - but he was particular about seeing the one stamped on the actual chassi. It madness, I've gone through NCTs a few times now and no hassle - but all of a sudden they don't have the chassis number on record, what the..?? http://mylandy90.blogspot.ie/ |

Thanks Lou, Think I may need to renew a few things - bushes and shocks at the same time - it's a 10 year old vehicle so may need some updating, but I'll see how I go. I'd like to do it all myself, but sometimes the professionals are needed, especially when everything is seized up! Just an update,
I went to LR Services Straffan; Dave and Will are very very helpful there. We organised a date for a full service with all fluids and filters replaced, then Dave replaced the rear shocks, and yes the Pin was missing from the Steering Linkage but the entire unit was shot (so much for the NCT peeps), so that was replaced, an oil leak fixed and a full under body check was carried out. I found their prices were very reasonable but more importantly the attitude / customer care was amazing. I'm being booked in for a Discovery Transfer Box to be fitted and then we can talk about straight through exhaust, intercoolers etc, Will report when this happens! http://mylandy90.blogspot.ie/ |
