I did the same as Couplands. Using a Netgear as the main router, I ran a cat 5 down stairs and then plugged in another router (BT 2 wire)
The Netgear is set to give out a DHCP address(with an address pool of i,e 192.168.0.10-192.168.0.99), so the BT 2wire picks up the address.
The 2Wire is also set for DHCP(but on a different address pool i,e 192.168.0.100-192.168.0.200) but gives out a gateway IP address of the netgear.

I have used 2 SSIDS but the laptops / phone connect to either one and work OK. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Thanks again all,

I've managed to find the old router so will have a go at configuring that as a WAP first of all.

The solwise kit looks good though and could come in handy for a couple of other ideas for the future. Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless.

my 2p ..

I have devolo, 200 and 500 mb versions, there are 1,2 and 3 socket versions and some even have wifi built in.

It's easy to encrypt the data too

The wifi model has an on/'off button on it

Other than the encryption, they are pretty much plug and play

PC world stock them but maplin are cheaper and usually have in stock

To add to what's been said, have a long term plan to run conduit sunken into the wall from the loft into every room that might require an internet connection. Then run conduit from wherever your internet feed is up into the loft and lay CAT5 cables to everywhere. You know they'll come a point when everything plugs into the internet (the Internet of Things) so might as well have a long term plan to make your house compatible with it.

It's a bit job if you do it all at once but cheap. It's what I've been doing for the past ten years and now everything is hard wired to the router. I get 60mbps on the computers, no drop outs, no back spots and the added bonus of network backup drives to save everything to or view/listen to things from. The only things that connect to the WI-FI are the phones.

Monkey - good job and no £'s parted with Thumbs Up You should be able to run a single SSID from both routers and your devices will auto switch between them. I have that setup here.
