puma alternator sense wire
hi I want to fit a split charge relay & two batteries to my car where do I pick up the sense wire from ? the one that only has a feed to it when engine is running .any one able to tell me its colour or even if you have done this job how you managed it . its a 2008 puma . much thanks stuart

I used a voltage sensing relay. It has three connections, one for earth, and two positives, as soon as the primary positive senses 13ish volts it activates the relay, joining the batteries so both are charging. So it's sensing wire is just the normal battery connection

thanks but I already have bought a relay & it needs a signal from a circuit that's only live when engine running

most modern alternators have more than 1 small wire (most have a multiplug ) and are engine ecu controlled ,so be careful what you connect too!

does the wire have to go to alternator could it not be connected to a ign live wire so unit is only on when ign on.

does the unit sense voltage or just need a live ?

if just needs a live then a ign live will do ..
ok if you were sitting ign on but not running then unit would be on (but I would not sit with ign on for anytime anyway).

if you only want it on when engine running then I would fit a voltage sensing relay as feed for that can come from battery as that would on switch on when engine running (alternator charging) .


be honest I would not want anything connected to alternator small wires on modern engine

Durite do several VSR's, from hulking great things that have an in built relay, down to smaller ones that can trigger an external relay.

Or if you wanted to keep it "LR", then use the VSR off of the 200Tdi defender that ran the heater rear screen...

my old 200 was a poverty spec one with a 65a alternator, and came with the VSR for the HRW (how many accronyms?)... if I came to a standstill with my main beam on and heater blowing full, the rear window would turn off Rolling Eyes

thanks think ill try an ing live circuit to try it seems easier or maybe look at a different relay

It sounds like the system bought is something like an X-charge system from X-Eng or similar.

Have a read of X Eng instructions on www.foundry4x4.co.uk.

Ignition fed live could also be taken from the back of the radio.

It's something I've made up from parts sourced from eBay. Thinking about it I will probably try and use the feed for heated windscreen as that only works while engine is running
