Mantec RAI - refitting
I would be grateful for some guidance here.

I bought my 90 with the Mantec RAI already fitted. It is [was!] fitted to the outside of the window frame using two rivets - one in each of a couple of brackets on the pipe.

After short time these sheared and when the 90 was in my local garage for a service I asked him to refit the pipe which he did, again with rivets.

Of course I realise now that rivets aren't up to the job, the location of the RAI means it is susceptible to a lot of vibration which doesn't take long to shear those rivets.

So the question is how should it be attached ? What is the best method ?

I imagine it's in the frame, suggest that you drill out the rivets, and tap some bolts in the frame, I have always fitted mine this way and never had an issue.

I did mine with nuts and bolts, it is easy to to remove the trim so yo can get behind the window frame. Cheers, Vincent

As an afterthought I am not sure of the support arrangement on a Mantec but on my Safari the bracket was beginning to tire with the powdercating beginning to flake and corrosion setting in so I got a stainless bracket made and simply stuck it with Sikaflex to both the frame and the snorkel. It negates the requirement for any further drilling and is still rock-solid 7 months later.

Many thanks for your replies, much appreciated.

In my opinion this particular RAI is a crappy design in the way it is mounted to the window frame, it comprises of two small individual brackets around 8 inches apart (see photo), and I don't think this is good enough for the job. The other photo shows where it was mounted on the frame and you can also see where it has rubbed the paint off adjacent to the top rivet, which happened when the top rivet sheared first and was allowed to vibrate.

K9F, I like your idea but don't think this design lends itself to it.

The design would work. But with a little fettling.

Instead of fixing at the two mounting points with rivets why not bolt a flat piece of 1mm 316 grade stainless to the RAI and glue as I perhaps suggested at the two points where it's rivetted to the frame? You could also just have just a single piece the 8 inches long and bolt to the two RAI mounting points and glue to the frame accordingly? The brackets look shot anyway.

Those rivnuts look tiny and that may be half the problem.
Obviously there isn't going to be much vibration which causes tension and compression through the axis of the bolt and rivnut (which would be fine)
However most vibration will be up down, forwards backwards which is effectively going to be trying to get the bolts to shear through.
My recommendation would be to drill out the old inserts and widen the holes.
Then pop in a couple of avdel inserts into the frame (the largest diameter that will fit)
This will then enable you to put in a larger diameter bolt which is less likely to shear.
Especially if you got some of high tensile ones
As previously suggested renew the brackets on the RA and put a strip between the two I but with holes appropriately sized for the new avdel inserts.
Then reattach.

Alternatively (if the brackets which come off the RAI are metal)
Simply weld a strip between the two brackets with maximum weld length.
Then attach by either gluing or bolting using avdel inserts.

Kind of a variation on K9F's suggestion

The reason why gluing works is that it spreads the load over the whole strip rather just through the two small rivnuts
So if you do go for system one perhaps put a couple of extra holes in the middle of the strip and frame so you have four points of contact.


Hope that makes sense (it did in my head.. honest)

I don't think those are rivnuts but pop rivets. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

Just drill out the two rivets, the holes left behind will be sufficient for a decent sealant to get a 'key' to the frame. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
