What grill fixings for my td5?
As the title suggests, I need to know what type of fixings should hold my front grill on.

I have taken it off to resprayed in Brunel grey and found I had to drill the screw heads off they were that corroded. I was expecting to find a red square plastic plug with self tappers inserted. What I actually had fitted were dome headed torx bolts and nuts. These passed through round holes in the air con grill.

Are these fixings correct or should I have some plastic plugs inserted, or should there be some type of push fit fir tree affair like the roof lining?

Thanks in advance

James

On mine its Pozi drive screws (which are now stainless and covered in Copperslip) and these go into red plastic things. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I think everyone is right! Puma models with aircon grille=Firtrees, TD5 =Red plastic plug with Posi self tapper. Obviously over the years as grilles have been removed for whatever reason they might get put back on with different fixings! As the OP has said his grille has round holes I think he needs the Firtree fixings as the red plugs fit into a square hole. However he might find that a previous owner has drilled the original square hole oversize for a nut and bolt fixing so might be worth checking that before buying new fixings as you might end up having to use oversize bolts again if the grille has been modified. Slightly puzzled about the reference to the aircon grille however if the vehicle is a TD5 as they don`t have the extension nose that the Puma does even if it has aircon. Confused

A td5 does have the extended grill for air con. The panel on mine is a good 10-15mm thick where the fastener goes through. The red plugs push fit into a single pressed aluminium sheet (as in my old 300tdi, obviously without air con).

Looks like I need some fir tree clips. Having looked at the links to other posts, are these more trouble than they are worth, as I have already bought some stainless nuts and bolts to replace the ones I drilled out? If, so, I may as well just use the nuts and bolts.

TD5's definitely have the extended nose for aircon where appropriate. The grill on mine was originally fixed with fir trees, although I've replaced them with SS nuts and allen bolts. Darren
