United Kingdom 2002 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Java Black
300 tdi hard brake pedal
just on with putting a 300 tdi back on the road after a lay up.

The vehiclce has pretty much had a full brake rebuild ( by someone else )

The broblem i,m having is a good pedal initially, then as you push harder to come to a standstill, the pedal goes rock hard, and is non effective on the braking.

ideas much appreciated.

Do you have vacuum at the servo ? 300 Tdi,s are well known for vacuum pump problems. 2005 Td5 90 XS

i only got it home late last night, so not had chance how a proper diagnose as yet. just looking for common areas of fault to save me time. i do have a spare vacuum pump though.

It could also be the non return valve on the servo, or one of the vac pipes may be damaged. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Check where the servo is bolted to the master cylinder. around the 2 bolt areas you'll prob see 2 radial cracks where the servo dishes in, caused by the constant flexing. If so, an extreemly effective TEMP remedy is to cut some thinish strips of gaffer tape and stick over the cracks after cleaning the area. after all its a vacuum so it will be sucking the tape on, not trying to blow it off. worked for me for 9 months, only changed it because of the MOT man..
Also if it had an EGR fitted that has been removed, check the hose that comes out of the servo, it'll have a T peice with a thin tube coming off. make sure this thin tube is plugged, or you'll lose vacuum.
