Hi all,
Some of you might be known with the changes in roadtax we Dutch are about to see happen. My 27 year old Defender is currently exempt from roadtax but it is very likely that as of 1-1-2014 the full amount of roadtax will have to be paid for it again.
Now you lot think driving and owning a car is expensive in England, hear this... This years roadtax is EUR 0,00 next years roadtax will be EUR 2300,00 
The Defender is my third car. I use it for about 2000 kilometers a year and with a petrol engine i would have to pay EUR 120,00 for a year.
Now... What V8 engine would you recommend? Where could I source one? Anyone have anything in the shed they want to get rid of? What gearbox do i need? I do not want an automatic and I want it to look stock. So and LT85?
What other parts do I need?
Let me know your thoughts!!

In a Defender that age the venerable 3.5 V8 with carbs would be my choice. I had one in an 86 110 and it was fantastic. Solex carb ones give more horsepower than the earlier Stromberg carb ones, and mate to a 5 speed box. I can't remember which number the box is sorry but it was a good strong one, made by Santana iirc. I suspect these engines are getting a bit scarse now though, but an early Discovery or a Classic Rangie would be the ideal donor.
The driveability and the noise it makes will put a HUGE smile on your face.
A world where a V8 is the cheapest to run.....
