This line of conversation is making me nervouse as hell.
Is there any advise for those of us that have been driving in water but not yet any seriose problems? I did have the vehicle back for a drive train knock and the lady that phone me to collect said that the technician had also done a software update but when I arrived to fetch the vehicle the technician said he did no such thing. After driving home I noted that the motor sounded more like a TD5 at idle than it did before. Hope this is not a sign of water and rather a software thing. (not sure though who was telling the truth) we have done a fair bit of riding very wet dirt roads. Is there any checks I can do at home regarding fuel filters to be removed and checked without the dealer getting involved just yet? Thanks James Puma 110 - gone Series III 1973 - going strong

At least I will know what to look out for ? And I too totally agree that anti stall is excellent ! I have driven defenders in the most inhospitable places on earth from the Arctic Circle to Afghanistan ! I know for a fact I can drive off road ! I can even do this when it rains lead hornets ! I've also rolled a couple and worse but that's got nothin to do with the Anti Stall Technology ! DEFENDER XS CSW 08 TONGA GREEN

thanks Mate
I will have a look this evening at draining some (hopefully only diesel) out of the filter (RHS) wheel arch. I also noticed a lot of you guys changing gearboxes because of the rattle sound. I have the same but only at low revs and is more like a diesel noise or similar to a petrol car that pinks when revving too low in a gear. Can this be or definately gearbox related? Not sure, but a 'knocking' sound/noise could also be related to fuel injectors not being 100% which may have been effected by fuel contamination as a result of water getting into the system. Some of the posts early on page 1 of this thread make for helpful reading. So a fuel injector check might be helpful for you although probably not a 5 minute job and probably fairly specialised/specific kit required. AK

I checked my breather and relocated to behind splash panel.
I reakno that little brether does not work well so am not convinced it will help much in new poistion. If you want to see where I put it see this link http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v427/Landy1973/FuelBreather/ There was a smaal amount of silt and water in the fuel I drained from the filter so it wasn't enogh to worry too much. I think from now on I am going to do regular checks to make sure I don't have same nasty surprises as you guys. Cheers James Puma 110 - gone Series III 1973 - going strong

Thanks for your shots, in particular the ones of the bled fuel filter. The water/diesel ratio was similar to mine, mine was probably more water, but it still did cause us to come to a grinding halt so i think that filter is something not to be ignored and to be checked regularly. AK

Surely it would need a lot more water to carry over into the rest of the system? To me that seemed like only a little water. +- 40ml By the way only the light brown part is the water, the lighter above is clean diesel. Where does that piece of extension pipe run to and did you add something on the end? Puma 110 - gone Series III 1973 - going strong

I suppose the fact is i am not sure, but our fuel was pretty much 50/50 at the time on the occasion we came to a halt. i am only going by the sample given to us by the garage and that may have actually come out of the fuel tank. But i will be checking the filter in the next couple of days and let you know. Andrew

Mine (just picked up) is a May 2008 build and the breather is nowhere to be seen which is good in the sense that LR in its wisdom has moved it from here . Bad in the sense that I don't know where they've put it Mahn '08 Defender 110 ex '95 Disco 300 Tdi www.aulro.com Last edited by one_iota on 26th Jul 2008 8:08am. Edited 1 time in total
