Remove Door Hinges
Gents

I've looked through past posts and scoured the net generally for assistance on this point, but I'm having trouble removing a stubborn lower door hinge. I resorted to using an angle grinder to take the head off the offending bolts, but am unable to remove the remaining stem as it appears to be fixed to some type of nut on the back of the pillar which I am unable to access.

Having removed the top bolt (of the lower hinge) successfully in the conventional way, I can see when peering through the hole that it once occupied, there is a black metal plate (similar to that acting as a spacer for the hinge and pillar) which moves ever so slightly when I turn the stem of the chopped bolt stem. The chopped bolt is stuck screwed in the bottom hole.

I assumed that the chopped bolt could have been pushed through once the head had been taken off but it seems that there is nowhere for it to go.

Question - how do I remove the bolt stem which is fixed to the bulk head (B pillar)? Is there a way to acces the back of the pillar?

I've seen pics and You Tube video that shows captive nuts sitting immediately behind the hinge but they do not exist on the TD5 (well on mine they didnt).

Thanks in advance.

Are you refering to the front or middle doors?

On the middle doors the nut at the bottom of the B (not bulkhead) pillar is in fact a rectangular plate with captive nuts. When the bolts are removed the plate may just fall to the floor.

On the front doors, the bolts go into captive nuts that are held in the bulkhead.

As for removing the stem, can you get any grips on it to turn it, to cut a groove in it and use a flat screw driver?

Ive sent you a PM that includes a photo guide of how to remove door hinges.

Sorry. I should have said.

Its the middle doors and the problem hinge was attached to the 'B' pillar.

Thanks Defender Virgin - go gentle with me!

Ok, ignore the above photo then. And ignore the Pm i sent you as that refers to front door hinges.

if you feel behind the lower B pillar right behind the hinge, you should be able to feel the rectangular plate with two holes in it. Its kind of recessed into the B pillar. Theres no separate nut on this plate, so its not as though you can just loosen the nut off instead. The nut is part of the plate.

The upper hinge bolts just screw into the B pillar and can be seen when removing the internal plastic trim.

Perfect!!!!

I didn't appreciate that you accessed the back of the hinge from under the vehicle but thought it had to be done from within the cab immediately behind the pillar.

As it turns out, a few gentle taps on the stem pushed the bracket out.

Thanks again! Very Happy Defender Virgin - go gentle with me!

Hey WarPig,

I've just found this threat as I'm looking at taking my mirror arms off to sand back and spray.

Would it be possible to get a copy of that photo guide to removing the hinges?

Many thanks 2006 Defender Double Cab- Zambezi Silver
