Help with DTC P0623
My Defender had a starter motor fail which was caused by a faulty ignition switch. Since replacing the ignition switch and starter I now have the battery light staying on. My hawkeye says its a P0623 fault and the battery is not receiving charge. Is this a coincidence or have I done something wrong? I have checked to see if all the wires a plugged in...all looks okay.

Have you tested your voltage at the battery? Sounds a little like it could be that.. Should read just over 12v at rest and just over 14v with the engine running, if not it's not charging the battery. The battery light will only come on if the voltage is lower than it should be. (Well as far as I know anyway) Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

It's an alternator issue then, it should be just over 14v. The 2v difference is what puts the charge into it so every time it's started it partially drains the battery but it's not charging it. It's staying at it's rest voltage all the time and will go lower until it doesn't start. If you continue as is you'll need a new battery and alternator because it will damage it.
Looks like you'll need to either repair your alternator (if possible) or get a replacement. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Have you checked all of the fuses?

Thanks for the tips. I also have a spare battery and alternator I can try. I will check and let you know tomorrow.

I had months and months of electrical problems I couldn't fathom, like a trickle charging alternator, putting out 13v under load, for a while, then a mere 12v, then not enough to charge it, some incorrectly reading gauges, and voltmeter, and battery charge light glowing, and coming on at idle.

New alternator cured every single one of these problems! 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

Okay, have tried a new alternator and battery. Still the same problem Sad

Going to try the old ignition switch just incase I induced the fault with a dodgy new switch.

The fault shows up as a "generator light control circuit fault" and in conventional machine/battery-sensed charging circuits the warning light does form part of the regulation circuit. A malfunction in the light control circuit could therefore cause a failure to charge.

I don't have time at present to study the relevent Puma circuits for more inspiration, but I suggest firstly checking all connections to the alternator and checking for obvious probelms with the new ignition switch. I can't recall whether the charging light is software controlled in the IPAC or one of the few "real" warning lights.

Problem Solved! The issue was of my own making as well. When the starter motor was replaced I had left the alternator wire off and it remained cunningly hidded behind some hoses. Embarassed

Thank you Defender2.net members for your help and advice.
