As far as i know the Disco 1 handbrake is the same but more plentyfull.

The other option is to put the handbrake on the passenger side as in a LHD but not so user friendly. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Yes I've done it. It was quite simple but best to have two pairs of hands. I used a disco 1 lever.

Loads more comfortable on longer journeys and for the £15 or so for the lever and an hour or so work it's well worth it Thumbs Up

I've now moved my hand brake, using a RR one that I bought off of flea bay for £15.00. I'm not happy with the RR gaiter as it looks a bit dated. Would prefer a black rexcine one. If you are going to do this, and I would recommend it, the forward bolt hole is 150mm from the front seat mounting bolt. If I was doing this again I would drill the first one another 20mm further back, as it just touches my leg. I used a 19mm drill for the cable hole, which came out as actually 22mm, which was fine. Here's some pictures before the cubby box was re-fitted. BTW getting the cubby box out took 3 hours, as the Rivnuts turned. The hand brake mod only took one hour:

The blanking plate was made from a spare single DIN blanking cover.

I'd recommend doing this mod, as now I have plenty of room to stretch my legs in the foot well.

You can re-use the gaiter off your original handbrake lever, it fits quite well Thumbs Up

I assume this has no adverse affects to the cable? eg. With it being further back (thus closer to the handbrake assembly itself), or does it work the same irrespective of positioning? An engine to TDi for!

Works exactly the same, you just twist the cable a different way.

I want to do this when I fit the X-Brake.

@ Sparky - is yours a LHD or have you stuck it next to the passenger's leg?
Did you use the original Defender lever?

Cheers

... do you now know what lever you used? Yours looks much better/OEM than the RR one in the how-to...
*Edit* okay - looks like Disco 1, like mk1collector.

Cheers

This is my upgrade. I kept the lever further forward than others because there wasn't a lot of room between the cubby box and seat.

I hope it is of some use.
