United Arab Emirates 2009 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Stornoway Grey
My New 90 TDCi
Hi there,

Been brousing this forum for a good few weeks as I pondered getting a puma engind 90 and despite the mixed reviews, decided to go for it so thought I should post a few pictures up here.

I'm currently working in Abu Dhabi and been here for just over a year now and have been missing having a landy, still have my Mazda 35SLTi powered 90 truckcab back home (Manchester) but this isn't the environment for that despite all the drafts. I have a car provided by work and my wife was hiring a yaris so managed to pursuade her she would be better off in a 90, only problem is that I can't get a drive of it! It's 2009 model with 15,000km.

It's currently fitted with 9.00x16 sand tyres but I will be putting the original Generals back on shortly and getting some spare rims for the sand tyres. I'm really pleased with it, the aircon is great which is a must here and the interior is a vast improvement. Rear forward facing seats are good except they take up too much room, even when they are folded up so a roofrack might be in order soon. Very Happy

On the down side, the gearbox clunks a bit although I am adapting my style and the changes are getting better, I'll give it a month or so and take it in if it's not right. Other disapointment is the traction control on sand, I'd read plenty about it but didn't expect it to be so bad, took me a good while to escape after stopping for the photo below. Can you pull the fuse on this model or is there another way of switching it off?

Anyway, a few pics........

Thanks, must admit we like the colour, had one in Al Tayer showroom same colour and were thinking about buying that and then this popped up on Dubizzle and had it the same day!

Tyres are "interesting" on the road, pretty sure they are cross ply and they would probably rub on articulation anyway! Will get the original tyres back on soon.

Do you get offroad much?

Cheers,

Stornoway Grey is the colour for a defender but some may disagree. Usually those tyres are seen on nissan patrols or toyota landcrusiers driven by the locals Whistle

Not much offroading maybe once in 3-4 months but the car is great since I have the 110 usually I don't attempt getting up the large dunes cause I ll just put alot of stress on the engine but its great for carrying 5 to 6 people and going in the desert whereas I recently bought a toyota landcruiser pickup for mainly work which I will use daily since I travel up and down from Ras Al Khamiah to Dubai and I don't want to put too many miles on my defender just keep her for the weekends, I'm sure you know the infrastructure in RAK is terrible. Thumbs Up

How was your first time in sand with 90, obviously the 90 is more capable in the desert compared to the 110? '08 LR Defender 110

Martin.

I get into Abu Dhabi tonight and leave on Thursday night. I'm staying downtown somewhere (near the new F1 track, I think). Do you fancy meeting up for a bite or a drink? it would be great to see your truck.

Alan - Good to speak to you, sorry we didn't manage to meet up - next time!

LRDXB110 - The 90 was okay in the sand until I stopped for above pics and then I couldn't get it going again, a lot of traction conrol kicking in and stalling. Ended up giving it an awful lot of right foot and a fair bit of vibration later it got going. Definitely pulling the fuse out next time!

Has anyone fitted a switch to disable the TC?

Cheers,

I took the vehicle in to have the gear change checked out and had a new clutch fitted under warranty, apprently the springs in the clutch plate had failed. I'm happy to report that the gear changes are now smooth.
Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
Hat off to Al Tayer motors for excellent service! Martin
