Its time to prepare for winter . The leaves are turning brown and the gritters will be on the road soon enough .Your top winter preperation tips please : No.1 for me is Waxoyle , as much ias possible . No.2 winter tyres . No.3 foldaway shovel and stored blankets and tools . No.4 all electrics in A1 condition and No.5 portable stove and bottled water for a hot drink incase you get stuck .

Decent screenwash, not the usual UK -5 deg C rated but something good to lot colder!

Top up the tank for the Eberspacher, reset the timer, saves on de-icer and extra coats in the morning in fact the boys can't wait to get in to go to school as I purposefully make sure the house is cold on school mornings

1. Dinitrol top-up
2. Washer bottle more antifreeze
3. Must check headlights for alignment (mine need raised a bit i think)
4. Check front spotlights (for flashing w@nkers driving with front fogs on)
5. Get ACF50 and ACF365 all over the rest of her for profection

I do use winter tyres, but on the Volvo (and wifey's Evoque)

Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

1) check and if necessary top-up Dinitrol system
2) install the Webasto Hot-Shot which is lying around for some time
3) same for the 230 V AC preheating element in coolant system

About November i put my road winter type tyres on and that's about it as a special procedure everything else is really just routine even carrying a folding shovel and extra dry coats. I guess that is part and parcel of what i do for a living.

Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

I had forgotten about wintering in a Land Rover must dig out the winter bag just incase. what do I need?

1. Thermals,extra set for when the heater stops working.
2. Woolen leggings for when the draught gets too much and the heater stops working.
3. Woolen scarf and hat/balaclava for when the draught gets too much and the heater stops working.
4. Snow boots plus 2 pair of woolen socks for when the heater stops working.
5. Extra short and long handled scrapers to clear the inside of windows when the heater stops working.
6. Blankets just incase I come across and L.R. driver who has forgotten to pack his/her extra clothing just incase the heater stops working.

I can also save money during the winter, turn the fridge off and use the Land Rover to keep food stuff cold, now where did I put that cool box.

My Dinitrol is ok, that will be checked/revisited and topped up next year.
September the annual scheduled dealer maintenance, so start winter with new engine-, gear/transfer box oils, diff oils, and full greasing job.
Possibly replace battery.
Already applied silicon spray to all rubbers to keep them supple and avoid freezing to the doors metal.
October change the summer rims/tires for the winter set which I just fully cleaned/prepared.
November thru March, only drive when it is dry, not snowing, no salt on the road, so clearly the SVX will spend most of its time under the carport hanging on the Ctek, or in the underground office parking.
And then comes spring again, ,..... eventually

You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Check battery/ies. A weak battery may cope in summer months but cold spells find them out.

Check your routes and note possible danger spots. This can be anything from black ice, snow drifts across roads, council blocking small side roads joining main roads due to ploughing to keep major roads open

PLASTIC snow shovel blade, much better then metal bladed shovels as snow sticks to metal shovels

FULL fuel tanks with winter fuel

Above all, ENGAGE brain and actually THINK before setting off and whilst actually driving. Drive to the actual conditions and be prepared to alter your route/plan
