My EGR is very noisy so I get to hear what it's doing while driving along. As far as I know, it only engages at idle engine speeds or on the over-run. So it wouldn't affect engine power as it shuts as soon as you accelerate of give it some welliie. I don't see it as such a bad thing if it's cutting emissions but not affecting usability.

depends on what you focus on. AFAIK and itīs already said above the EGR and oxygen-less air recycling is there to reduce the unwanted NOx which the Diesel-catalysator cannot get rid of as well as on petrol engined cars. Downside is a less economical burn of fuel - as it cannot be guaranteed that everey molecule of Diesel will find oxygen in the combustion chamber (see - you take effort to cool down compressed air to increase the densitiy of oxygen, but the EGR is there to do the opposite). You will get more particulates - which the DPF has to cater for. And you get worse fuel economy. Would be nice to hear if the fuel consumption was reduced for those who had the EGR closed all of the time by a remap. |

I fitted a new EGR just under 2 years ago in my 2007 defender 2.4 TDCI because the original (although I can't it was the original as I'm the 3rd owner) became eratic, and kept throwing up the MIL light. This replacement has now packed in, not even doing the chugga chugga at engine off and its throwing the MIL again. Of course the warranty on them is only 1 year. What a piece of junk they are. I'm tempted to fit a blanking plate but reading the notes above I see it may cause other issues and effects. They are bloody fiddly to get in and out and they are not cheap to buy.
Has anyone successfully repaired one? "You are never to old to learn something new" |

Most diesels only achieve a 70% burn of the induction charge, so I don't understand why reducing NO is the holy cow when you are clearly using more fuel to do the same job! LPG gasification of diesel would make it cleaner with less particle matter. However introducing diesel soot which is abrasive with EGR is a total crazy.

Refer to my post on "EGR Fault" in this Puma section. You will see I managed to fix the EGR. It turned out to be an electrical connection fault withing the EGR body. An easy fix with and a more reliable connection method was used. The EGR is maintainable to a degree so it's worth taking them apart. Most garages sadly wouldn't bother though, maybe due to labour costs.
