Germany 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Baltic Blue
Fast motorway tyre pressures?
Quick straw pole...

Any suggestions about ST/Maxx 265 R16 tyre pressures for distance motorway driving in a 110? I'll be covering 1500km traveling 120-140 km/h.

I usually run at 28/32 (unloaded) but I'm wondering if e.g. 35/40 would save rubber/fuel etc. with a "full house". Not sure about the "physics"...

Personally I use 30/40 for high speed motorway driving even when towing.
27/38 normal use.

On my 90 I tend to use on all 4 wheels 1.9/1.8Bar for offroad, 2.1Bar for general local driving (mostly cobberstone roads) and used to pump up to 2.4Bar for motorway cruising.

Whith my 7x16 rims on 235/85 BF ATs I was getting uneven tyre wear and no rear fuel saving improvements at motorway speeds. The tyre's cross section was getting rounded because of the inlfation.

Now I just leave them at 2.1Bar or pump slightly to 2.2 for the motorway, and just let the heat from the higher speeds to increase the pressure naturally.

I'm going on 2,1 bar front and 2,3 at the back with 265 summer tires, never change when loaded, just gets too bumpy and most of the defender tires have reinforced sides anyway, so had no problems yet.
Doing 25.000 km per year mostly on motorways/Autobahn with permanent speeds up to 150/160 kmh (depending on winddirection and slope Rolling Eyes ). I haven't realized much tire wear yet, seems to be a good compromise between durability and comfort

Well, I learned a lot today. Somehow I started the journey (cold in Germany) at 4am with 35/40 psi and finished (very hot in Spain) with... 41/46 Shocked

Surely listed tyre pressures are for use when cold, which allows for heat build up after driving? The ambient temperature will be largely irrelevant - the temp difference you've noted will be down to the distance you've driven. Darren

I recon I got the tyres up to nearly max temperature after a few hundred km...
I wonder what the "target" pressures should be? Could then work backwards Wink Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Its abit long winded but you can work out what optimum tyre pressures for any given load by trial and error .
Take tyre pressure before journey. record pressure at end (that is if the journey is over about 10/20 miles)
If the tyre pressure has increased by more that 6 psi then you started at Xpsi below the optimum that you are above the 6psi increase. If the tyre fails to reach the 6 psi then it was X psi above the optimum that you are below the 6 psi . HTSH

In fact ambient temperature can change tyre pressure, but lets not go that way.

The problem is that I belive that people tend to forget that at highway speeds the tyres heat up a lot, and with that heat comes the extra pressure. Try to touch your tyres in various situations and you'll the notice the temperature variation.

I once started a 100km motorway run (+-110km/h) with 2.15Bar, and ended with over 2.5Bar. At 2.5Bar the tyre is already getting a weird shape, imagine if I started with the high pressures some guys use.

By the way, I measure with an ARB analogic gauge or a Schwalbe digital, depending on the situation. Both quite precise
