Winch Bumper Advice required - problems
Having had my ARB bumper on the car for 13 years now, has served me well but it is starting to look a bit tired so a last years show I ordered a new bumper (not an ARB) which was delivered September ish last year.

With the sun coming out i decided to fit it at the weekend. Now bearing in mind that this has not even been on the car I was a bit miffed to see it rusting. So it is going to come off. The question is what is going to be the best way to protect it properly.

I assume i need to get it blasted and either powder coated, painted properly or galvanized.

Does anyone have any suggestions - I am afraid I am not in for an argument of sending it back I just want to get it sorted properly so that I can have a car I am proud of again Big Cry

Or should I call it quits and buy something decent. From memory this cost me the best part of £275

My winch bumper was in a similar condition, so I took all the old plastic powder coat off with a grinder and then took the bumper and steering guard to a local powder coater who charged £60 for both.

So far its holding up well.

Cheers

Simon

I have no idea why manufacturers powder coat bumpers designed for off road use. Knowing that they are going to get knocked about why powder coat? No matter how good the powder coat is its going to chip and then moisture can get between coating and bumper and start the gradual peel.

My personal choice on bumpers side bars etc is to get a good deep galvanise, primer and then paint. That way chips can be easily touched up to keep it presentable. A good deep galvanised coating, from personal experience, seems to hold up extremely well against knocks. I've had a couple of really heavy rock hits on the side bars go deep enough that I touched up with a zinc coating.

You can powder coat over a galvanised coating, but I've found this to be more brittle than over steel and touching up powder coat doesn't look so great after a number of touch ups.

Cheers

Steve

similarly the roll cage needs attention but when questioned safety devices say that if you try to galvanise the tubes will bend and not fit!

How much abuse do you give it off road? Therein lies much of your answer.
