Need advice about garage fallout / gearbox failure!
Hi all,

I've got a problem and I'm hoping for some advice.

Just last week I got my Defender 90 back from a Land Rover specialist after undergoing a full chassis swap. The work carried out by the garage took 2 months and included a new galvanised chassis, new fuel tank, brake lines, suspension, bushes etc etc It cost my over £3000.

I've done 30 miles since having the car back and I've just had to be recovered on a low loader due to a power steering leak and total gearbox failure.

The garage has called it 'sods law'

My feelings are that I find it really coincidental that I'm left roadside 30 miles after the car was rebuilt and the fact that I may now be faced with another huge bill doesn't sit well.

What do you think?

I think you need to find out the reason why the failures have happened. Have they forgotten to fill the gearbox up with oil causing the failure? Did they forget to do something up tight enough causing the power steering leak? If so then it is clearly their fault. However if a seal has just gone pop on the power steering and your gearbox has just gone bang for a normal reason then it probably isn't their fault. More investigation required i think.

Did the garage rebuild the gearbox too or just bolt it in the new chassis? If they just swapped it over did they refill with oil? You need to check what catastrophic failure the gearbox suffered before accusing really.

get it independently checked by a proper engineer and havevhim write a report on his findings

Is there any reason why it took a specialist LR garage 2 months to do a chassis swap? Marsie on here does them within a fortnight on his own!

Need the full facts first,, what,s failed Question

Why would the garage drain the box oil, ? just to remove from one chassis and fit to another Question

So long as you don't go "shouting the odds" yet !, sure the garage will have a look, and see what the problem is,, and if down to them,, will put it right for you

depending how much over £3k,, ?? I would say, if that inc all parts and labour, a very fair price California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1
