Replacing rear bulkhead plate with a bar.
Can all Defenders (& Series) have their rear bulkhead replaced with bars to allow the front seats to be moved back more?

Having a bar was why I chose my XS instead of a van. I learned about the after market bar later.

Wanting a knockabout Defender, I'd want to replace a bulkhead with bar as a first mod. Advice please, & what bar is best? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender

I've got the Mud Stuff Bulkhead Removal Bar. It's a great but of kit and was really easy to fit!

I'm about to do the same on my 90. I had an old rear tub that I scrapped, so I kept the top C channel of steel that came off of that bulkhead.
I'm going to chop (the bulkhead) down to the right height, and with the remaining C channel, and my salvaged one, weld it into the shape (which should be something like \______/ ) then re-rivet it back on.

I removed my entire rear bulkhead and replaced it with an original LR (bulkhead removal bar), the manufacturers were selling a few on ebay that were rejected for cosmetic imperfections, I paid £80 for the bar (retail price can be £150+) and it took the best part of a day to fit, cutting the bulkhead out wasn't that bad, a 4" disc grinder with a thin cutting disc and a reciprocating saw and then a sanding disc to clean the rough edges up. The only difficulty was, you are supposed to remove the rear van sides so you can get bolts through to secure the top of the bar, I forced a nut in the gap and fit the bolt from the underside up (sounds strange but I can post photo's to explain if you want) all in all in "Haynes manual rating" I would say 3 spanners, gives loads more room for seats to go back especially if you fit the mud rails. + 1 for MUD. I have one and fitted a couple into other peoples. Easy job, will take about 4/5 hours and looks like it was manufactured that way. Excellent service from MUD Thumbs Up

Thanks folks, I'll budget in a MUD bar & seat slides but can bow look for a van with a rear bulkhead knowing it can be replaced. Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world.
