guys I'm desperate to try and do a fix on the car and there appears to be 2 nuts getting in my way (no jokes please).
as you can see in the photo the nuts holds the bracket in place at the 6 and 9 o'clock position. I'm hoping to loosen these to enable me to make a small adjustment to the position of the bracket so it lines up with the hole in the exhaust manifold / heat shield hanger. problem being the 2 nuts seem extremely tight and I obviously don't want to break anything......can I possibly be doing anything wrong and short of breaking my tools whats the likelyhood of breaking studs etc. I presume these aren't reverse thread etc any advice etc would be most welcome. oh and no TNT jokes as thats already crossed my mind.

Due to the heat in that area I would guess those are going to be welded to the bolts, the same as happens to exhaust bolts.
Try soaking with a decent penetrating oil just don't drive it with the oil in place. Other things would be an impact driver or try to undo them when the engine is hot. Good luck. As above, a decent penetration oil.... Then 'don't be scared' !

thanks very much. was looking for penetrating oil but couldn't find any..... anyhow just got back in and hey presto one of the nuts was a little loser and when I found that out I gave it a bit more welly on the others and all sorted 
followed by a very quick test drive and there's an improvement. ..... only half a job tho. heat shield hanger all lined up and secured back in place but no heat shield and lower CAT heat shield still only secured by 2 of 4 bolts. so back outside to refit upper heat shield and will use one of the upper 3 bolts on the lower CAT heat shield and see how it goes tomorrow. in the meantime I need to get some more bolts. |

my nuts came off without problem when hot
ok more serious 3 tips 1. you might try to tighten them a bit first, minimal movement is enough to break them loose had more bolts breaking off when putting high force trying to undo them then trying to tighten them, hence the above 2. If i am correct nuts are on studs, you might try to loosen the studs instead of the bolts if you have the star shaped bit-tool for it 3. i found WD40 to be even more effective when applied to hot parts. Might be the local temp shock freeing things or the oil becoming super fluid, no idea but it works. (just dont inhale the vapours) good luck |

the future is bright....the future is 2 or 3 more bolts !!
ye ha.....just been for another test drive after fitting the heat shield which included only 2 bolts at the top and only 1 at the bottom so I'm definately 2 bolts short but even so WHAT A DIFFERENCE !!! I can actually HEAR the turbo spinning up 
flaming marvellous..... can't wait to get the extra bolts but for now I'm a happy bunny and 99% sure I've cracked it at last......... flaming morons telling me everything is fine and thats how they sound  flamin 2 years
Can I just say a big thanks for your patience along the and an extra big thanks to Pete (BAS). Never met the guy and never bought from him so no connections but he's been golden. so willing to help etc. - thank you. |

glad it helped ? I keep a regular check on things and thankfully nothing seems to be working loose. good move with the 12mm holes. I hope all is going well now.
