Gearbox oil change done-almost buttery change now !

After what seems like an eternity (well a couple of months) waiting for a gap in the weather I've changed my Puma 110's gearbox oil. I had previously done both diffs and xfer case but held back on the gearbox due to the fiddly aspect of refilling. I opted for some synthetic Motul 75w90 gear oil (opie oils listed) and pumped it in using a draper oil syringe which handily pumped better than it sucked.
The old oil which was suspected of being oem @18.5Kmiles old came out coloured like dark treacle (though not as thick) and had a weird purple tinge when being poured into my waste bottles. No sign of any foreign bodies which was nice as it always felt a bit rough changing gear previously.
Gear changes after the swap almost seem buttery smooth now (relatively speaking) and I'm sure there's a lot less gear noise now though that could be a placebo effect.
Gawd only know what the oil would come out like if sticking with factory service intervals.
PS mine a 2008 has allen head fill and drain plugs not torx as per sticky on oil changes. 2023 110 P400e

im tempted to do mine. its covered 4000 miles now and 2nd and 5th can be quite stiff on cold mornings. i have heard horror stories of the factory underfilling gear boxes and diffs when the leave for showroom/customer.

Never been a fan of fill and forget strategy most manufacturers have on transmissions these days so even at 4k miles I'd think it was a good thing to do. I just crawled under mine and there was plenty of space to wiggle the Syringe pumps filler tube into the gearbox fill hole, though if your a little uncertain do a dry run with the filler hole before draining the oil out.
I measured just over 2 litres drained out of mine so probably about the 2.2l quoted for a refill once spillage was taken into account. 2023 110 P400e

Well done Macduff ! Its a very satisfying job to have completed knowing the contortionist skills involved isn't it ?

I do mine annually now. When you look at how hard those couple of litres of oil have to work in a Defender Landrover's recommended intervals are nonsense. The 'box will have disintegrated long before 200k !
