Transfer failure in a Puma
Yesterday a Puma owner that participate in the Argentinean LR forum request our assistance.

During his vacations in the south of Chile, he detected vibrations in the transmission that was increasing by the time.

Short history: After several trial and error efforts, the local dealer check the oil in the transfer detecting a lot of metal bits inside. According to the dealer, the transfer should be replaced completely. That means for him the end of the vacations that just started Sad Sad

Taking in account that there is not any transfer in stock in Chile, he come back to Argentina with the Puma (We hope that can arrive safely) to be repaired there.

Anyone with the same trouble?

Cheers Eduardo

Ok,

As far as I see it is not a common fault.

Thanks Eduardo

I had 3 transfer boxs in under 10000 miles, then the last ones been o.k until now. its booked in on monday to have the transfer box removed and stripped.

The first transfer box that was replaced only lasted 200 miles!! Sad

Scatt,

Thanks for the answer
They were able to identify the origin of the failures?

Regards, Eduardo

They couldnt understand how the first one failed in 200 miles, and they werent keen on replacing it. But after some discusion they did. As for i dentifying the failures, (horrible vibration when driving) No is the answer. All the dealer said was thats broke we will order you another. and then another, and another.

The problem its going in for on monday isnt quite a failure, but more a fault. Basiclly the difflock light works when it wants, They have checked the wiring and the switch but no joy. so transfer box out and strip down to find the fault or faults. Its never easy if it had been somebody else it would be a nice simple switch!

Once its back i will let you know there findings. they have told me it we be approx 4-5 days, as they have also got to remove the dash to fix the heater switch! sometimes i wonder why i bought a defender?

Thanks Scatt for your prompt answer. It is almost the same that happened to my friend: vibrations and something broken inside)

I hope that the new fault will not be serious.

Cheers Eduardo

Trucks back, but theres one part thats on backorder. Im told that since ford got involved and changed the defender about they have taken all the adjustability out of the transfer box. so my 20000 miles truck is having worn out parts removed and new fitted?? what happens in another 20000 miles when the warranty has run out????? Rolling Eyes Confused
