Ticking noise
Hi all
I have owned a 300tdi 90 for the last year and have loved driving it but I have noticed its making a ticking noise when accelerating have taken it to a garage (not a landrover one) and to start with they thought it was coming from one of the injectors but then they started to think it might be coming from the front of the engine cambelt area either cam belt or fuel injector pump. I am also having starting problems when it's been left for a while as if fuel problem has had new glow plugs. Its R reg and covered 118000 odd miles.
I am not overly mechanically minded but iam willing to try if its not to hard a fix
Many thanks in advance

Ticking when accelarating can come from an exhaust manifold gasket blowing, this is heard more when accelarating due to the higher pressure in the system it is hard to replicate when just revving the engine with no load. The starting problem may be a seperate issue a worn fuel lift pump is a prime suspect on a Tdi.Keep us posted. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Thanks Lou
Have managed to hear the noise when just reving the engine while stationary could this still be exhaust manifold is there a way to check this out. Also fuel lift pump is there away to test this.

Look for soot marks around exhaust manifold area, this may not always show a leak though as it may be in an inaccessable area. The fuel lift pump lets fuel run back to the tank when it is worn and this then leads to poor starting as it needs lots of cranking to get the fuel up to the pump. You can check the fuel pump by opening the bleed screw on top of the filter housing and operating the lift pump by hand if you get fuel out straight away then it is probably o.k if you get lots of air before any fuel comes out the it is probably on its way out.A fuel lift pump is only £25-£30 so at your mileage is probably worth changing anyway.I hope this has been of some use to you. 2005 Td5 90 XS

This is usually a sign of a cracked or warped head

Swapping a fuel pump is a really easy newbie job.

Worth buying a Haynes manual but also search on YouTube

An engine speed related ticking or tapping noise on a 300tdi is quite likely to be a worn vacuum pump. Not hugely complicated or expensive to fix IIRC (it's a long time since I last had one of these). It's always difficult to diagnose sounds over the Internet though, so I'd suggest finding a good independent Land Rover garage who will know what they're looking at. Darren

I had a ticking on a 300 which was none of the usual things and as a last resort I pulled the head and found a crack between bore and I think an oilway.this was only opening when very hot, and often gave the impression of being speed dependant.

Take the cover off and have a quick look, as said above, a Haynes manual is a money saver.
