Just wondered what people have done to fit secondary batteries. I've seen them fitted into the battery box, but was wondering how feasible this is, as they look very tight. I would be fitting a smaller auxiliary battery, not for winching or anything dramatic, rather for short term use of electrical items such as lamps or (small) compressor.

Two batteries fit ok with room to spare for cabling, extra fuse block and cut off switches. Rather than add to stock battery, I went for two identical batteries from same batch and wired in parallel. Simple, but very effective.

I've just changed my auxiliary battery and went from my old caravan battery(75ah) to a 110ah jobbie. This is fitted in the seat box along with the standard vehicle battery, just be aware the shape of the bottom of the seat box can hamper some sizes, the second battery sits on a raised portion and I sourced one off t'internet with a height of 190mm which gives it some clearance under the lid panel even if it is all the way to the back of the seat box. Still got room for the charging relay, jump leads and a few other things I haven't got round to putting on yet

I made one in my old 90 (although my current 110 has an ex Wolf unit.
The wolf one fits optimas in OK, but the top clamp won't fit them (as the top of the batteries is too wide) so made my own one up with a piece of flat bar. For the 90, I just got a flat piece of steel (think it may have been chequer plate) fairly beefy, 3 or 4mm thick. and welded on a piece of box along one edge. box was the same width as the recess is in the battery box.. can't remember what it is, about 30 or 40mm I think. Bolted this down to the bottom of the battery box, placed the batteries in where I wanted them, marked for the upright studs either end and one in the middle. Removed the plate, drilled the holes and welded a nut under each hole. Then refitted and used some studding (6mm I think, or 8mm, depends on what we had at work), cut the studding to length (height of the battery plus 1/2" or so) and welded a nut to the end of each one, to make a long bolt. cut a piece of flat bar to cover the batteries (about 30mm x 5mm) and drilled it to match the holes in the lower plate. then bolted the lot together. Unfortunately not got any piccies of this setup. Just looking at your photos, did you still use the original battery connector with the Mega fuse in? |

If you look at the top let hand corner of the photo you can see the original red cap with the mega fuse on side of the battery. Extra slots were cut in the cover for the additional 35mm2 cable. Brendan |

Finished the installation of the dual battery system.
It is a bit of a squeeze, extra flexible battery cable is the answer. I went for the Blue Sea Marine auto charge system and extra fuse box and whilst I was at it fitted an Anderson connector. I already had the Yellow top Optima but has to go for a Red top for the starter so I could use the original positive battery connector, the posts are too far in from the edge on the yellow top.
