Cold start prob
My Def 90 300TDI decided not to start today.

Always been fine since I got it almost a year ago but the -5 last night meant that it turned over fine with a strong battery at start up but never actually started. Of course eventually the battery gave in so will have to have a look at it tonight.

Any advise as regards the weak areas that could be prone to failure in the cold would be wlecome. Thanks in advance Keith Sweatysock

Had the same thing on my Tdi a few years ago checked the glow plugs and found none of them were working so changed them and still no joy, turned out to be the fuel lift pump letting the fuel run back.Nice cheap fix and easy d.i.y job too. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Thanks for responses to date, think I will start with the lift pump. I have heard you can identify if it is faulty by turning the engine after losening a screw on the top....does that sound right....you may have guessed, I am no mechanic Sweatysock

You can loosen the bleed screw on top of the fuel filter housing and operate the lift pump by hand and you should get fuel coming out of the bleed screw if the pump is ok.Probably worth changing the pump anyway as they are only about £25-£30 and they can get week with age. 2005 Td5 90 XS

if the fuel drained back from the lift pump it would do it all the time not just on a cold day

water in the fuel and or fuel filter that had frozen blocked the line?

waxing - possibly - unlikley i would of thought.

does it start off a jump now its warmer? Cheers

Just tried it again - started 1st time bursting into life. Will have to have a look at it when light and check out some of the suggestions - the water freezing theory does seem to hang together Sweatysock

all working as normal and been caught up with work so no major diagnosis. Having said that, I did try out the lift pump as suggested and all looked ok.

I am unclear as to how I would establish if their was wax in fuel or indeed water in fuel filter other than just replacing them,,, I guess my plan was to see if the situ replicated itself and then take it from there.. any continued advise would be appreciated Sweatysock
