SMOKING DEFENDER
hi guys,

I need some advice as to what has happened to my Defender TD5 engine, the engine has started smoking this seems to be mainly white smoke, it starts fine and doesn't smoke, but as it starts to warm up it will smoke, I've not got any loss of power neither have the fluid levels changed, someone has mentioned to me it might be an oil seal on the exhaust side of the turbo, as the exhaust warms so does the oil hence the smoke, is there any way of checking this without having to get a replacement turbo.

It also seems to have a miss fire when you hold the revs at about 1500rpm and belches out loads of white smoke, there is no pressure in the cooling system or diesel in the oil, as soon you release the throtlle it stops, it will rev up with no missing but smokes.

the engine was perfectly fine before this, doesn't breath out of the rocker cover and has covered 75000 miles

Sorry to say that sounds exactly like the symptoms mine had before the turbo expired Shocked

Start it in the morning and there was blue/grey/white smoke. Seemed like it was running on 4 cylinders. Would clear but still puffing smoke on revving the engine.

Changed the injector seals, injector harness, MAF sensor, cleaned the MAP sensor and still happened.

Eventually the garage looked at the front of the turbo and they could see it was taking a few seconds for the turbo to start spooling when the engine was revved - and oil was then being forced into the engine.
Diagnosis on mine was oil seals and bearings shot.

New turbo has sorted it Thumbs Up

57k on mine and it is a 2001.

thanks Bob,

I’ve done the same Maf sensor, Injectors seals etc. hoping its the Turbo, but does not have any play, will look tomorrow to see if its spinning ok, I’m hoping then it’s a seal on the exhaust side as I’ve been told, your symptoms described do seem to be the same, fingers crossed, thanks again
