PAS pipes, at the pump end?
Can anyone shed some light on this one.....

Just got some used defender steering pipes from Fry's in Cheltenham. all great, they came off a defender, no issue there.

The high pressure pipe, from the pump to the box, the union that screws into the pump is quite big (about 3/4" across the threads, or so, as a rough guesstimate)

But the union on the pump, for the above bit to screw into, is much smaller.

I've got a couple of pumps here from a couple of Td5 engines i've got, and they both have this smaller diameter thread on the pump (one of the engines is definately ex discovery, and I have a piece of the disco PAS pipe with this smaller flanged thread on it)

There doesn't seem to be any other part numbers on microcat for earlier defender PAS pipes that might have had a smaller thread (although the new version may have deleted any old numbers?)

The defender and disco PAS pumps have different part numbers, eventhough all the mounting bracketry is the same, so maybe it's just this union on them that's the difference?

Does anyone have an old gash ex defender pump that they would be willing to a) measure the high pressure outlet flange, and b) unscrew it and sell it to me? can swap for a disco one if that helps?

cheers

I *think* the union is different, when I swapped engines from Defender to Discovery sourced engines I had to fiddle about with the fittings on the pumps.

Is the small thread piece not just an adapter into the pump, which you can unscrew?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Thinking about it, you had a PAS pump off me, didn't you?

That pump is off a Defender engine, but I think the D2 adapter may have ended up fitted to it - in which case it will unscrew.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

You can just see the shiny silver outlet adapter in this photo:

No, OK, I'm wrong - the D2 part doesn't adapt a Def pump to a D2, a Def pump has a different adapter Embarassed

Hi Martin

Yeah, that last pump went on the 110 and was a defender type. This is for the next project.

It looks like that's all the difference is between the pumps; The holes in the pipes (defender vs. disco) are a different size, so maybe the union alters the oil pressure.

I went into my local dealers to see if they had a duff defender pump on the shelf waiting to be sent off, but no luck, so anyone got a knackered pump I can rob that adaptor off of? (it just unscrews) can swap for a disco one/hob nobs etc. Mr. Green

I swapped the PAS pump on Pam's 90 not long after I put the TD5 into it. I'll see if I've still got the old one in the garage - probably have as I was so surprised the pump had failed that I wasn't completely convinced it was the cause of the problem.

I'll take a look tomorrow and let you know.

Do you have the I/D measurement of the "wrong" adaptor so I can make sure it's the right one ? It should be as I'm using standard Defender PAS pipes. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

That's the one.

The OD of the WRONG disco threaded end on the pipe is 15.7mm (across the top of the threads)

ID of the wrong union for the above is 14.4mm

The correct defender union on the pipe, OD is 19.9mm, so I'd assume (without stripping my 110 pump off) that the ID of the union would be something like 18.6mm

If that's what you've got there, would you unscrew it and sell it? can swap/PX it for a discovery union.

cheers

The one I have matches your Defender type measurements.
PM your postal address to me and I'll stick it in a Jiffy bag. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/
