It took me an hour to do the de-cat pipe, I don't know whether it was help or hindrance that my 11 year old son provided or the stream of neighbours offering advice that influenced the time taken. The mid box was done in 30 minutes, most of which spent hacksawing the bolts off the front pipe( I did this first before replacing the front pipe )
It's a really really simple job, it's only the chassis x-member that can give a bit of frustration as it was quite a tight fit inbetween the rails on mine. It still suprises me that on my 2002 model, nearly all the structural nuts and bolts that I've had to touch have all responded politely to the spanners, the studs on the exhaust joint were the first I've had to apply something other than a spanner! After owning a 200tdi 90 well.into it's late teens wore out my last angle grinder!

Now have the Exhausts, Terrafirma ones bought here in Aus.

Will normal nuts and bolts suffice ? I'm assuming I don't need to go for Hi-Tensile nuts and bolts.

I was going to soak the old fittings with WD40 before attempting to remove then.

The only one part I am concerned about is the top 3 bolts on the decat pipe up near the engine, If removing them becomes difficult it may be difficult to get a hacksaw or angle grinder in there. Shocked

"ordinary" bolts should be fine, whatever you use it would be best if they were plated, assemble with copper grease to aid removal if required, soak originals before you attempt removal, i have found Plusgas better than WD40 but i dont know if you can get that locally.....

On mine, 2002my, the 3 nuts under the turbo were the most easy ones of the lot!

x2 ^ on my 1999MY those bolts where also the easiest. The ones for the rear box to centre pipe took the longest and had to be ground off. Best advice get some new bolts and some exhaust paste to seal the flange. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Terra Firma De cat pipe and straight through middle pipe bought in Aus, now fitted.

I actually found it pretty easy removing the whole lot and fitting it all back in, no real problems with the old nuts and bolts which surprised me, I had the angle grinder on standby but in the end did not need it.

On the old system there was only 1 metal gasket between the Decat down pipe and the above section. I put this back in, there was no other metal gaskets between any of the sections.

Is this correct?

Same as mine, just the metal gasket from the turbo to the cat/de-cat pipe(the only flat joint) all the others act as clamps on "bulbous" joints, that way you can tweak the angle of the pipe with the rubber mounts.

Col,

Have you noticed any increase in performance?

What about additional noise on the highway?

Cheers,

Lance,

Slightly noisier, but as I left the Original rear box on it is okay. It is not an annoyinging drone, I quite like the sound of it now!

It does seem to pick up quicker, so performance does seem better, don't know about fuel as yet.

For your Info, If interested......

I bought the two sections from Sydney 4x4 Accessories, part numbers are TF562 and TF555, cost $318.88, plus $30 shipping.

Thanks for that Col, good to know

I've been considering doing the same and it sounds like we have a similar setup

Thanks also for the supplier details. I had been looking at bringing the pipes in from the UK but that's not a bad price. It still winds me up a little that I could get them express couriered from the UK for around $50 less. Gotta support the local guys I guess

Cheers,
